When I started, you know, I was desperate for a guitar.
It had to be red, it had to be electric.
And then I didn't have the nerve to
My dad couldn't afford one of these,
so he bought me a 50 quid sort of German imitation,
which I loved.
I probably slept with it on the very first night
I tried to get into bed with it.
Then I didn't have the nerve to ask him for an amplifier,
so I plugged it into the radio and blew that up
pretty [Ab] short order.
[Abm] In short order.
And then I borrowed a friend's acoustic guitars
and I ended up playing in folk places
because my pals' big sister [E] wanted to sing in folk clubs
and different things.
I got exposed to a lot of that,
and then I eventually found out how to pick the guitar
[G] and finger pick it,
which is instead of using a piece of plastic.
So I was playing both ways.
All the time I just wanted to be in a rock band.
[A] [N] It was good that I went that way.
When I was getting into a lot of country blues
and doing my studies with all of that stuff, if you like,
you know, [G] I had to get hold of one of these.
And, [E] you know, that was the top of the slippery slope back then
and back in the early 70s when I got my first national.
It's called a national because it's very [Am]
vulgar.
It has lovers and palm trees, lovers in a canoe,
and I just think they're magnetic objects.
And I played a lot of bottleneck and steel on them
and learned how to play them a little bit,
but then the guitar itself just started to get on records
that I was making
and found its way onto all sorts of records.
I was fooling around with it one day
and came up with this one.
[C] [Bb]
[C] [Bb]
[C] [F] [Bb]
[F] [C] [Bb]
[F] So your upstruck [Dm] Romeo's got a serenade
[C]
[F] Laying everybody low [Dm] with [F] a love song that you [C] made
He finds a [Bb] streetlight, [C] steps out [F] of the shade
Says [Bb] something like, you and me babe, [C] how about it?
[F] Juliet says, it's [Dm] Romeo, you nearly give me a heart [C] attack
[F] He's underneath the window, [Dm] she's singing
Hey love, [Bb] my boyfriend's back
[C] You shouldn't come around here
Singing [F] up at people like that
[Bb] Anyway, what you gonna do [C] about it?
[F] Juliet, [C] the dice [Dm] was loaded [Bb] from the start
And [F] I bet [C] you [Dm] exploded in my [Bb] heart
[C] And I [F] forget, [Bb] I forget
[Dm] The [Bb] movie song
[Gm] When you gonna [F] realize [Bb] it was just [C] that the time [Dm] was [C] wrong
[F] Juliet, Juliet
[Bb] We [F]
[Bb] [C]
[F] come up on different [Dm] streets
Both were streets of [C] shame
[F] Both dirty, both mean
[D] You said the dream [Bb] was just the same
[C] I dreamed your dream [Bb] for you
[C] So now your [F] dream is real
[Bb] How can you look at me?
As [C] if I'm just another one of your deal
When you [F] can fall for chains of silver
[C] [Dm] You can fall for chains of [C] gold
[F] You can fall for pretty [C] strangers
[Dm] [Bb] And the promises they hold
[C] Promise me [Bb] everything
[C] Yeah, you promised [F] me thick and thin
[Bb] Now you just say, oh Romeo, yeah
You know, [C] I used to have a scene with her
[F] Juliet, [C] [Dm] when we made love
You [Bb] used to cry
[F] Love you [C] like the stars above
You [Dm] said I love you, [Bb] baby, till I die
[C] And there's [F] a place [Bb] for [Dm] us
You [Bb] know that movie song
[Gm] When you gonna [F] realize [Bb] it was just [C] that the [Dm] time was [C] wrong
[F] Juliet [Bb] Yeah
[F] [Bb] [C]
