[F] [Bb]
You know, these songs, when I compose [Ebm] and I write for a [Gb] Mark Lettieri record, it's just
kind of [Bb] like wherever I'm at as a player and as a composer, it's going to come out.
I don't know what that's going to be.
I don't really ever set out with a sound in mind.
I just kind of let everything that's in me kind of come out [B] and where it goes, I just
try and, [Bb] you know, stick with [B] where I feel like each particular song wants to [C] go.
[Eb]
[Ab] If you've been to a Snarky Puppy show, you've probably heard [Gb] this.
[Eb] [Bbm] [Eb] Well, it was a track.
[Bb] [Ab]
[Eb] [Ab] You [Bb] know, different songs call for different sounds.
And different feelings have to have different [A] sounds.
[Ab] The emotion that I had when I wrote the song needs to come out in [G] the guitar tone that
I dial [Ab] up.
It needs to come out in the bass tone, the drum tone.
[E] They all have to be connected, [D] even if they're all over the place.
[A]
[D] [C]
[Cm] [G]
[F] [C] I can't even play my own song.
How about that?
[A] [C]
[A] When I go [Gm] to write a song, I don't really [F] know what [G]
genre or [D] flavor or style is going
to bubble to the surface.
I might [Eb] start with a certain [C] idea sonically, and [Ab] then as it grows and I keep milking it,
it [C] kind of, oh, well, maybe this is actually something [Ab] else.
Maybe this has turned out to be a really [C] heavy rock song, when at first I thought it was
going to be like a ballad.
[Cm] [Bb] [Gm]
[Bb] [Gm] [Bb]
[Cm] [Cm]
[G] At the end of the day, it doesn't matter if I'm playing my [Eb] music or if I'm playing somebody else's music.
The goal is to serve the song.
[Ab] To serve [F] the original creative intention of the [C] song.
Whether I wrote it or somebody else wrote it.
So that might mean, [Eb] well, it could mean any number of [Ab] things.
But that's always my goal, is to play [Ebm] in a way that serves the song.
