[Dm] I'm sitting in a recording studio with Triple M on the edge of the Brisbane River and my name's Mark Seymour.
And I'm going to record a song [D] that Hunters and Collectors played in the late 1980s called When the River Runs Dry.
But I'm performing it on acoustic guitar because there's no band here with me.
And the way I've got around dealing with their absence is to interpret the song on acoustic guitar.
No drums, no bass, no horns, no electric guitar, no keyboards, just me and this thing here.
And what I've done is I've taken a chord, the A minor chord, which is deeply folk
and one of my favourite chords, it's very sad.
[Dm] [D] And I've [C] introduced a scale underneath it with my left hand, which is [B] C, [Bb] B and then B [Dm] flat.
And I've used that to define the verse feel.
And like a lot of those songs from the early days of the band, there were only two sections, a verse and a chorus, which made for wonderful simplicity.
We liked to keep things simple back then.
That's before the producer from California got a hold of us and told us we had to always have a third part in our songs.
And anyway, so [D] the first section runs like this.
[C] [G]
[Gm] [C] [D] [C] [G]
[Gm] [C] [D] [C] Good [F] [Em] news for [C] beautiful people, [D] [C] watching the world [Em] go by.
[E] [C] [Dm] [F] Make [Bm] love in the middle [E] of a war [C] zone, hey, you're never [G] gonna [Gm] die.
[C] [Dm] Don't rock the [G] boat, keep [Gm] your head [Dm] down, you're just another fool [G] in the crowd.
[Bb] [Dm] Everybody knows [Em] you can [Gm] be a [C] winner, [Bb] come on and [A] shout it [F] out loud.
I'll stop there because I'm about to launch into the chorus, which is in this chord, it's an F.
An F played in a C shape with a capo on the fifth fret.
Just write that down.
And the chorus comes in on that major chord like this.
When the river runs dry, [Am]
you [G] will return to the scene of the crime.
When the [Am] river [F] runs dry, [Am]
salvation [G] will rain on you one more time.
When the river [Dm] [F] runs
[G] Back into the [Bb] verse.
[Dm] And that's it.
[G] [Bb]
[Dm] You got the [C] power, [G] I [Bb] got the money, [Dm] another [C] million [G] miles to [Bb] run.
[Dm] [C] I'd cry, [G] cry [Bb] for the future, [Dm] but I wouldn't [C] get [G] anything done.
[Bb]
[Dm] [Am] Relax, [G] [Bb] abandon ship, [D] turn [F] your back on mother [G] nature.
[Bb]
[D] You [C] got nothing [G] but your soul [Bb] to sell.
[Dm] [Am] You got nothing.
When the river [F] runs dry, [Am]
you [G] will return to the scene of the crime.
When the [Am] river [F] runs dry, [Am]
salvation [G] will rain on you one more time.
When the river [Dm] runs [G] dry
[Bb]
[Dm] This is the way that normally [G] a solo comes [E] in, but I'll do this.
[Dm] [C] [B] [Bb]
[Dm] Ooh
[Bm] [Em] [Bb]
[E] [Dm] [F] [G] [Bb]
[Dm] [Em]
[Bb] [Am] Good news for beautiful people [Dm] [Bb] watching the world go [Am] by.
[Dm] [C] Make [G] love in the middle [Bb] of a war [Am] zone.
All of God's children [Dm] [Am] are never [F] gonna [Am] die.
You [G] will return to the scene of the crime.
When the [Am] river [F] runs [Am] dry, salvation [G] will rain on you one more [Am] [Ab]
[G] time.
And that's it.
Thank you.
