[N] Hi, I'm Spoon Phillips, and I was invited to come out to Maury's Music today to tell you a little bit about the Martin D18.
The D stands for the Dreadnought body size and the 18 stands for Martin's Style 18, which comes [G] with
mahogany for the back and sides and a spruce top.
This is the standard series D18.
It is built with all solid woods.
It has [D#] genuine South American [G] mahogany that has some really nice
[F] grain on the side and the back,
nicely straight and banded.
It has a Sitka spruce top.
This is high quality Sitka, very tight grain with some wonderful
shimmery cross soaking all the way across the length of the top.
It has an
ebony
fingered ordon bridge, and
it has a one-piece neck made from mahogany.
And the neck has Martin's very
nice modified low oval for the profile, and it's matched with the Performing [F#] Artist's taper.
And this has a
nut width of 1 3 quarter inch, so you have some room down at the first position where you often have to bend your wrist.
But as you go up the neck, it has a narrower taper than the traditional Martin necks,
so it ends at 2 1⁸.
So it's a very fast sleek neck.
It is matched with a string spacing of 2 3 16ths,
which is halfway between the Standard Series
OM finger style
[N]
spacing and the traditional Martin dreadnought spacing.
And under the top, the
Standard Series D18 now is equipped with forward shifted scallop braces
that allow the top to vibrate more freely,
that leads to a more resonant, robust mahogany voice.
