[F] [D]
[Bb] [A] Hi, I'm Bill from Guitar Center.
[B] Today I'd like to show you [C] the Martin D [G]-42.
[C]
[F] This is
a [A] 14 fret style guitar [Gb] in the dreadnought body from Martin.
It's [Bb] been around since the
[B] late 90s.
The very first one [C] was made in 1934 and that was the only one made until [G] the 90s
when [F] players were wanting vintage guitar features [Gbm] and the D-42 [Bb] was resurrected.
[Bm]
[A] It's a solid
Sitka spruce top [F] with East Indian rosewood [Gm] back and sides.
Very nice figuring [G] on this
guitar.
[A]
[Gb] It's got a vintage toner or [A] sometimes called an aging toner on the top [G] so it just
darkens it a little [D] bit to make it look like it's an older guitar.
[F] It has ebony bridge
and fingerboard.
[C] It has what Martin calls style 45 [F] snowflakes.
They are made of abalone
pearl.
[Bb]
[F] And of course, the thing that hits you in the face about this guitar when you
first look at it is [C] all this [D] phenomenal abalone trim around [E] the top called purfling and of
course [Db] the rosette and [D] goes down around the fingerboard.
I mean, [Bb] this is the real deal
[A] here.
And by the way, this [E] stuff, each piece of this is cut [G] by hand and placed in here
like [Gm] a little mosaic.
It takes [F] quite a bit of work.
The backstrip is like [Eb] a mosaic.
It's
incredibly done.
If you look at this up [D] close, you'll see it's made [G] up of a lot of little
pieces [Abm] of varying woods.
[Gm] [A]
The [F] binding on the guitar [Bb] is called grained [A] ivoroid.
So it [G] is
a synthetic product but it has a texture to it and it has a [C] coloration to it that again
makes it [F] look quite vintage.
The tortoiseshell [G] color pickguard is [C] beveled and polished.
It's
a higher end pickguard than the normal plastic one.
[G]
[Em] Inside the guitar, [Am] we'll find scalloped
and forward shifted bracing.
The bracing under the top is what keeps the [C] string tension from
pulling the top off the guitar.
The [Em] spruce top is a soft wood chosen for its [F] vibrational
qualities and tonal qualities.
With [B] 170 pounds of pressure pulling [Em] on it all the time, without
the proper [G] reinforcement inside, it will pull up and [Am] pull off actually.
[G] So the bracing patterns
[F] have been established and the Martin X [Em] bracing pattern is one of the most commonly used.
This one is forward shifted a little bit.
Although the braces are on the inside of the
[G] top, they are carved [F] by hand in order to lighten their [C] mass so that they do not detract
from the [F] top vibration.
It's a very delicate [C] balance between too much braces and not [F] enough.
Not enough, the top fails.
Too much, [C] it mutes the sound.
[F]
[Em] [G]
Tuning [C] machines are [G] open gear,
[F] vintage style, with what we call a butter [C] bean tuning knob, which is this little guy
here.
That's what that shape comes in.
Again, brought back from a long time ago in terms
[G] of stylization, they just look great.
[F]
[C]
[G]
[Fm] This guitar is designed for [C] just about any musician.
The big dreadnought body provides a [Am] lot of bass and extra volume.
[F] It is the most popular
guitar body in the business [Gb] today and it was [Am] actually invented by Martin, if you didn't
[Em] know that, but it was invented by Martin.
And [C] so it's copied by just about everybody
else [F] in the guitar business.
[C] This [Em] lends itself to any style of music, folk music, country
music, [F] flat picking, bluegrass, you name it.
If you can [Em] play it, this guitar can take it.
[F] [G]
[Am] [G] [Fm] You can play this guitar at a [C] Guitar Center store near you or you can see it online at GuitarCenter.com.
