[D] Well, I think the first thing to do to get you [E] started, to get you sort of affiliated
with the instrument is just to pick something very simple.
I mean, just spend a little while [G] just [D] fretting some single notes, finding a [Dm] sound that you like.
[D] The [Eb] cornerstone of the way that I play is to try and create a bass line and a melody line.
So, finger style players will know that theory from, you know, like Travis picking, finger picking styles.
So what I try and do is create this bass line.
We're in open D tuning [D] here, so I've got two D's.
And it's just this mechanical thumb [Ab] picking.
And I think I said [D] this in any advice I've [G] ever given guitar players who are trying to
get started [D] on the slide guitar, really, is just do this for a while and maybe just
watch TV, [Eb] you know, or maybe throw something over the string so it doesn't drive your significant
other or your family or your dad.
Absolutely insane.
And try and get your thumb used to working independently so that it's not too much of
a conscious thought.
So we're in this open tuning.
We've got [D] a bass line moving.
And you're going to take your first or [Bb] maybe your second finger, whichever you [D] feel more
comfortable with, put a very [Ab] basic melody together on the [D] first string with just two
or three notes.
