Martin Phillipps - Submarine Bells - Interview and Performance, November 1997 chords
Start Jamming...
[C#] The Submarine Bells was written at a time
it
was kind of towards the end of a four-year [G] important relationship.
I guess I knew at the time that [E] there was kind of a path
I
needed to follow with my own music
but
it was [G] gonna destroy the relationship or contribute to it.
And the song is kind of saying to my partner
"I
[G#] can see the sort of hidden depths inside you
and
I know how strong our love is, but it's not gonna last."
And that's exactly what happened, [G] really.
Whether it was self-fulfilling prophecy or whatever, I'm not quite [B] sure.
[E] I can [B] watch [A] in wonder
as
[E] your gaze shifts [B] past [A] my shoulder
just
a glimpsed [B] abyss that [A] flashes at me
[C#m] I know deep [C#] down hidden in submarine [A]
[B] bells chime
[C#m] Golden groaning, sunlit toning, [A] submerged sound [B] so [E] prime
Since the weakest [B] [A] currents bruise it
[E] [B] Someday I [A] may lose this
[E] [B] Immersed in words [A] and miss you
[F#m] Yes, I'll [B] always goodbye
The lyrics, they're [F#m] quite unlike the [G#m] kind of stuff I usually write.
And that I think they were [A] sort of a bunch of symbols that [B] really sort of worked.
They kind of summed up what I was [G#] feeling
without
really having to express it too definitively
or
try to be the thing, you know, the wrong thing to do.
It kind [C#] of
In a way, maybe it's cheating.
I don't know, because it's not really writing about what you're feeling.
But it's just like saying, well, it kind of conjures up these kind of images
you
know, in the sense of like a huge [C] bell swinging underneath the sea
miles
down [E] on its own.
And just by describing these things, you know
all
of a sudden you've got this bit of [G#m] poetry
without
actually having to sort of really, you know, say, I feel this.
So it's quite an easy way of, [C] I guess, [F#] always like keeping it a bit distant too.
[B] I slice the surface [A] here beside you
[E] Lungs [B] filled liquid, [A] yeah, I love [E] you
Sound [B] moves [A] further, humble [B] mortal
[C#m] Deep and dark, [C#] my submarine
[C#m] Bells blow [A] in greens [B] and grey
Mine would [A] chime [B] a thousand times to hit you [A] Feel [B] okay
Okay
Okay
[E] Okay
