Usually when you're recording a record, there's always one song that comes late in the day.
You know, like way later than everything else, like an 11th hour song.
And this song, Iron Lung,
was that thing.
I'd been thinking for a while about the whole theme of the record, about breath
and the wonder of everything.
Just being sort of a bit more childlike about everything, faith, hope,
my life.
And I was reminded of a story that my mum told me quite a few years back now.
And I've
forgotten it, but it was the fact that when I was six months old, I contracted bronchopneumonia.
And they whisked me into hospital.
And apparently I was nearly going to die.
And I was lifeless.
And
my mum and dad were freaking out.
And apparently they put me in an oxygen tent,
which is sort of like an iron lung, like an artificial breathing device.
And while I was in
there, my mum and dad prayed this pretty audacious prayer.
Something like, look God, if you let this
little boy make a noise again, we'll give him back to you.
So that's quite a major
thing for parents to pray.
I mean, we've got six of our own kids and the thought of sort of
handing them back to someone else is like outrageous.
But there they were stood in the
hospital saying, okay, God, you know, you can have him back if you can save his life.
So unbeknownst to me, that's what they prayed.
And I must have felt that.
And,
you know, I started making a noise and I probably haven't stopped making a noise all these years later.
