[D] Officer, how can it be?
Rest in everyone boat, crew [G]
staggerly.
[Dm] Bad man, [D] old staggerly.
[A]
Bad man, [Dm] old [D] staggerly.
[Dm] Hi, [G] and welcome to Masters of the Delta Blues Guitar [D] with Kevin Duggan.
[A]
[Dm] [D]
[Bb] Hi, my name's Kevin Duggan.
This is Masters of the Delta Blues Guitar,
[B] where the focus is [Bbm] on the Delta Blues genre,
but not [D] really limited to.
[Db] So this is in [Bb] the key of D.
[D] It's [Bbm] an old [D] Mississippi John Hurt song [Bm] called Staggerly,
which is an [Bb] old [Bbm] folk [A] standard [Bb] that he arranged.
I don't think he wrote it.
It's in the key of D.
He slides in at first,
always keeping an alternating bass.
[Dm] [Bb] So right there [B] you're [Bb] sliding,
[G] [Bb] but the trick is to [D] keep an alternating bass.
[Dm] [D]
[Dm] So what you're doing is,
[D]
[Bb] you're F sharp and you're D there.
Slide up to F sharp.
[Gb] [Gm] [B] So you're doing [Bb] a combination of hammer-ons and slides.
[Dm] [D]
Then he [G] goes to the G chord.
[B] So all you need to finger there is just these [Em] two top notes at first.
[B] So [G] I'm pinching,
[Gm]
[Bb] coming down on the D note.
[Gm] [G]
[Gm] And keeping an alternating bass.
Back [Dm] to the D and sliding.
[D]
Then to [A] an A.
Where you have your pinky right out to the A note.
[D] Slide out.
[G] That was a pinch to the B [Bb] from the top, the [G] G to the B.
Keeping the alternating bass.
[Bb] Then bringing my [G] pinky down on the D note for [Gm] another pinch.
[Dm] [D]
[E] Then [Bb] slide up, grabbing two strings.
Two strings, the B string and the D string.
Fingering basically [Ab] an A chord.
[Bb] [Cm] [Dbm] [A]
[Cm] [A]
[D]
So this is in the key of D.
So [Bbm] if you want to make this song sound [D] even fuller,
[E] you could drop the D note.
[Eb] [D]
Drop the E note rather, I'm sorry.
The E bass, your lowest note.
So you have a
So now
[G] your G, when you finger your G, you're going to be up on the 5.
[Bb] Because you just dropped your top string.
[G]
[D] It's kind of almost easier to finger that way too.
[Gm] [G]
[D] [A]
[Dm] [D]
[G]
[E] [D]
[A] [D]
[Bb] It just gives you a fuller sound.
Plus you can do a bass line like this if you want.
[D]
Kind [Gm] [D]
of
[G] [D]
[A] [D]
hard to keep that bass line going sometimes.
[G] [D]
[A] [D]
[B] So that's Mississippi John Hurt's [D] Staggerly.
[Bb] It's just three [D] chords.
Your D chord.
I'm going [Bb] to drop D tuning right now, so your [Gm] G is going to be up here.
You can also finger, you can finger double here.
[Bb] Or you can finger it like [Ab] this if you want [G] to.
And that's still your G.
Doesn't sound too good for blues.
[Bb] So [Gm]
[G]
[D]
[A] [Em] [D]
[Bb] [B] that's Staggerly by [D] Mississippi John Hurt.
And that's [Bb] the end of [D] this lesson,
which is the Masters of Delta Blues Guitar.
[Bb]
[D] Thanks, bye.
