I'd like to sing you a song you may not have heard.
It's a song I recorded a couple of years ago on a record called Walls and Windows.
It was written by a friend of mine called Joan L.
Mather,
who came to visit in Ireland with me a long time ago.
She wrote this song based on the Irish blessing,
you know, may the wind be at your back [F] and the devil in heaven and all that stuff.
[C#] But she really kind of brought it back to brass tacks.
It's everything you ever needed to be.
You can sing it at weddings, wakes and funerals.
And it is just a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful song.
If you need solace when you're sad or a way to keep you up when you're happy,
this would be the song, and it's called The Blessing.
[Am] [F]
[G] [E] May the rain always [N] fall soft upon your field
And the sun pour down like honey where you stay
May the wind be at your back and the road rise to meet you
And your soul rest at last in the hollow of God's hand
[Am]
[D] [Am] [C] [D] [Am]
[D] [Am] [G] [Am] Life isn't easy, [E] no one [D] ever [C] said it [Am] was
But if we are lucky, [F] [Am] [E] we will [D] love [Am] and be loved
And may the rain always [D] fall soft upon your field
[G] And the sun pour down like honey [E] where you stay
May [A] the wind [Am] be at your back [D] and the road rise to meet you
And [C] your soul [D] rest at [E] last in the hollow [Am] of God's [D] [Am] hand
Trouble and sorrow [D]
[Am] carve [E] the lines [D] on your [C] [Am] face
[G]
How but [Am] don't fear tomorrow
[C]
[E] Cause you will [D] meet it [A] with [Am] grace
And may the rain always fall [D] soft upon your field
[G] And the sun pour down like honey [E] where you stay
May [Am] the wind be at your [D] back and the road rise to meet you
[C] And your soul [D] rest at last [E] in the hollow [A] of [Am] God's [D] hand
May [G] [E]
[Am] [D]
[C] [D] [G]
[A] [C] [Am]
your friends be as many [E] as the [D] promises that [C] you [A] keep
[C] May [Am] your laughter inhale the [E]
[D] devil to [Am] weep
And may the rain always [D] fall soft upon your field
[G] And the sun pour down like honey [E] where you stay
May [Am] the wind be at your back [D] and the road rise to meet [C] you
And your soul [D] rest at [Em] last in the hollow [F] of God's [G] hand
In the hollow [C] of God's hand
[G] In the hollow of [Am] God's hand
[N]
