Start Jamming...
When we were on tour together for all those years, one of my favorite parts of the show was when you would do impersonations.
Oh my god, I don't know about that.
Yeah, I'm gonna ask you to grab the guitar again, would you?
Well, okay.
Because I want you, I know that you named your son Marty after Marty Robbins, did you not?
Marty was named after Marty Robbins and Marty Stewart.
No, not Marty Stewart.
Ha ha ha ha!
Sing a little bit, you used to do Marty, sing, do a little imitation of Marty.
[C]
Let [E] me think.
I told Mary about
I told her about her great [B] sin
Mary cried and forgave him
And Mary [E] took me back again Johnny [A#] Cash.
[E] Can you do it, you used to imitate Johnny Cash.
Well, I'll tell you what, I'll tell you a story.
My wife called me, I was up in Minnesota, and her voice was shaking.
And she said, Johnny Cash just called me.
[N] And I said, well, what'd he say?
He said he's gonna call you right now.
I said, okay.
I just hung up, the phone rang.
I said, hello, this is Johnny Cash.
Ha ha ha ha!
You answered the phone!
And he said, that's pretty good, Agger.
You know, I never heard you imitate George Jones.
I never heard you try to sing like George.
You know, some people, I like to do George's songs, I do Jimmy Rogers' songs.
Some people, it's beyond that.
You can't, there's people who have dedicated their whole life to sounding like George, George Jones. July, July.
Well, thank you.
How you doing, Merle?
My favorite singer of all time.
Hank, Hank Senior, but his old boy has sung some great stuff himself.
Well, we are too one of these days.
We ain't gonna be dead for long, am we?
Hey, you're singing better than I've ever heard you.
Well, you know, how'd you do that?
Well, [B]
that's cause I haven't got everything opened up yet, you know, that's first try, you know.
Oh, man, it sounded awful good.
You guys did an album together, you had, what, several hits off this album.
Yeah, boy, it was a good album for him.
[E] I laughed so hard at No Show Jones, because you had such a good time with that [B] song.
I mean, how many cuts did it take to do it the way you did it?
Well, he's a perfectionist, you know, and of course we stayed in there a couple of days and a half,
and usually I'd do one three hours, you know.
No, uh, we did, uh, I guess maybe three sessions.
George, I don't think we'd spent more than two weeks on the whole thing.
Yeah, we were just, you already had the songs.
Were you having as much fun as it sounded like?
George was just about a week off from straightening up.
[N] You can tell by the picture.
And, uh, I don't know why, the people from New York, no offense,
but the people from New York that do a lot of that, the picture work and stuff like that for your albums and things,
they pick out the worst picture in the world.
I had one with my dog, it was better than that.
Well, I'll tell you what, if you get any album cover at all, nowadays you're doing good.
Well, that's what I want to talk to you about.
How have you been?
I'm good, George.
You know, it's just, to sit here with these two guys, I mean, my heart's going like this,
I mean, it is, it's just [A] incredible to sit here [C#] with two [N] legends like this.
I'm not kidding you.
It sounds good.
The first time that I ever met Merle, and I heard him mention it a while ago with Bonnie,
was at the Blackboard.
That's right.
I believe, if I'm not badly mistaken, that's where it was.
That was a bar in Bakersfield, California.
Right, and I remember seeing, watching Merle so strongly that night, and he didn't know it.
Yes, I did.
Yes, I did.
But I said, Lord, I heard this guy, they called him on there in a little bit, and he started singing,
and I started, I said, well, where has this boy come from?
And my goodness, you just, well, you just had my whole attention the whole night.
George, I remember that like it was yesterday, and you know what a day yesterday was?
Oh, boy.
Wasn't it good?
We had a good time.
Do you think, I don't know if you've read George's book or not,
but this is the most incredible book that I have ever read in my life, and I mean that sincerely.
And I know it's on the New York Times bestseller list and everything.
The fact that you had so much trouble in your life, you've had so much trouble in your life,
do you think that that has, A, brought you guys together,
and B, [F#] have something to do with this tremendous talent that exudes from both of you?
Well, first of all, [C#] we caused most of it.
You caused most of the trouble?
Oh, yeah.
No.
Back when he and I was growing up, if you didn't start something, there wouldn't be nothing.
There wasn't nothing happening, was there?
[D]
It's not like today, you know, when everybody got so much different things to do, you know.
We didn't have that much.
But Frank, I mean, the trouble that the two of you have gotten into separately,
an entire society hasn't gotten into that much trouble.
I mean, it's incredible.
And still this marvelous talent.
[F#] When you guys open your mouths, this gold comes out.
It's just fascinating.
Well, I'll tell you what, both of us, and he'll agree, we've been very fortunate.
We've both been touched.
But I'll tell you what, I think it's because you really, really enjoy what you're doing.
And I know we did.
Every night, every town, every city, you just couldn't wait to get on stage because the people,
you loved what you were doing and the people did too.
Who are you talking about?
Are you talking about George Jones?
No, I'm talking about you and me.
Speak for yourself, George.
And so many different artists.
And if I can say this before you knock me out of the limelight here.
No, sir.
My wife, Nancy, you know Nancy.
She bought me one of your new box sets, and she was supposed to have it [N] here with us
and went off and left it at the house a while ago.
Nancy don't usually do things like that.
If you love Merle Haggard, and I know you do.
There it is.
I mean, this is the most incredible collection that you'll ever find in your life.
I don't know if you drink or not.
You don't have to drink, but you might drink after you hear it.
Stay right where you are, guys, please.
Okay, we're going to be back.
We've got lots more going on in our very special primetime country with Merle Haggard and George Jones.
How's this for you?
