Okay, so basically this riff's a chromatic idea.
Now we're going to start with a
single note type of riff and then on the second run through we're going to be
utilizing like more of a drop D power chord sort of thing, pretty much
utilizing the same frets.
Okay, so to get your head around this riff the best way
to look at it is to think of it in groups of three and at the beginning of
each group of three we're returning, or sorry, returning to the open string.
Now
this is for the most part.
There's the odd point there where we don't do that
but basically we just start on the open six and we're going to go open one two
this is on string six and works like this.
[D] [D#] [E]
[N] So that's open one and two on
string [D] six.
[D#] [E] What you do [D] then is open two and three, [E] [F] [D] then open third and fourth.
[F] [F#]
[N] Probably the best way to use your fingers here left hand wise would be to
stick to the first, second, third and fourth frets using those four and then
shift over when you have to go the fifth at the end of this sort of fragment.
[D] So
it's [D#] [E] just
[F] [F#] [D]
[F#] [G] at that point there so that's where we're playing open fourth and
fifth.
[D] [F#]
[G] Okay, now to finish the bar then we play fourth and third fret [F#] twice.
[F] [F#] [F] So [D] bar
one sounds like this [D#] [E] and [D] [E]
[F] [F#] [D] [F#]
[G] [F#] [F] [F#] [F]
the next bar is a little bit unusual because the ideas
overlapping.
So we're going to start on the second fret, play second first and
[E] open [D#] and really that those two [G#m] frets they're really carrying back from the
previous bit at the end of the bar one [F#] [F] [F#]
[F] [E] [D#] and after that the whole [E] process starts
again.
So in the second bar second fret and first fret [D#]
[G#] and then we're going to do
like we did before so open first and [D] second, [D#] [E] [G] open [C] second and [D] third, [E] [F] open third
and [D] fourth [F] [F#] and [G] then pretty much it's a chromatic run down from the fifth fret
all the way down to the first fret.
[F#] [F] [E] [D#]
So bar two sounds like [E] this.
[D#] [D] [D#] [E] [D]
[E] [F] [D] [F] [F#] [G]
[F#] [F] [E] [D#]
Okay so this is
the single [D] string riff in its totality and this is slower tempo.
[D#] [E] [D] [E]
[F] [D] [F] [F#] [D]
[F#] [G] [F#] [F] [F#]
[F] [E] [D#] [D]
[D#] [E] [D] [E] [F] [D]
[F] [F#] [G] [F#] [F]
[E] [D#] [D]
Okay so on the
second run through here basically what I've done is just done the same frets
but with power chords.
So this is what this one sounds like slower tempo.
[D#m]
[Em] [D] [E] [F]
[F#] [D] [F#] [G] [F#m]
[F] [F#] [F] [E] [D#m]
[D] [D#m] [Em] [D] [E] [F]
[F#] [G] [F#] [F]
[E] [D#m] [D] [D#m] [F#]
[F] [F#]
[D] [F#] [G] [F#] [F] [F#m]
[F] [Em] [D#] [D] [D#m]
[Em] [F]
[F#] [G] [F#] [F] [Em] [D#]
[D] [N]
Just quickly you might have noticed in the intro I did finish these riffs a little
bit differently and that was with a single note at fret two with a pinch
harmonic.
Okay so this is the palm muted power chord idea and I'm just going to
introduce that pinch harmonic into it so you can see what that looks and sounds like.
[D#]
[F#] Okay
[E] [D]
[D#m] [Em] [F] [F#m]
[N] [F#]
[Dm] [G] [F#]
[E] [D#m] [E]
[F] [N]
[D]
so that concludes today's lesson.

[D#] [D] [D#] [E] [D]
