[Ab] [Gb] Hi there everybody, Corey at Gemini Guitar.
In today's lesson we're looking at a speed metal style idea
in the vein of I guess something like Megadeth perhaps, so let's check it out.
Okay, this riff focuses on down [E] picking.
[F] [E]
[Bb] [F]
It also focuses on the ability to switch between palm muting and not palm muting.
So for example when I'm playing the intro idea, start on the open 6th string.
[E] But I'm also doing power chords which aren't palm muted.
[F]
[N] And the third thing is the ability to add fills to a riff.
As for a general breakdown of the idea, power chords involved are E5, 7th [E] position, [F] F5,
[Ab] 8th position.
These are all on the 5th string.
And then we've got that lovely Bb [Bb] power chord.
[E] Which gives it that really sinister atmosphere.
I'm going to play this idea for you slowly.
Now keep in mind that the 6th string is in between the power chords and it's always palm muted.
[F]
[E]
[Bb] [E]
[F]
[Cm] Towards the end there I [E] did the fill which I showed you before.
I'm going to break that down now.
What I do here is I start with the open 6th palm muted.
I'm going to go to 7th on 5th and pull back to 5th fret.
[D]
[F] [E] I'm going to hit the open 6th again.
[B] Hit the B note on string 6 fret 7 and pull back to fret 6.
[Bb] [G] Hit open [E] 6th again.
[G] Hit fret 6, string 6.
[Ebm] Pull back to the [Bb] 5th [A] fret.
[Gm] So now I [E] get this.
[B] [Bb]
[E] [Bb] [A] [E] To end things off I'm going to hit the open 6th a few times.
[Dm] And then sort of pull something a bit different out of the bag.
Here we're going to go to the minor 2nd interval, the F note.
[Ab] And then we're going to go up to the G sharp note here.
[E]
Which gives it a sort of mystical sound.
