being in the White House with President Bush one month after September 11th.
And we talked about Flight 93, _ _ _ and he said, Michael, _ you need to write a song about these events.
_ _ _ _ _ I couldn't bring myself to say no.
How do you say no to the President of the United States of America? _ _ _
But I had such a hard time, and I struggled, and I probably strove too much and tried to
find the words.
_ _ I never could find it.
So I quit trying, and thought, God, if there's a song there, I believe that you will birth
that song in me somehow.
To make a long story short, I began to see, _ I think it was one particular night, I think
it was in March, that there was a special on the History Channel that kind of centered
around the American flag.
It was fascinating.
I learned a lot more probably from that special than I did in high school.
_ _ It's amazing the technology we have today.
_ But I remember being so moved, and they kind of fast-forwarded some snapshots, and that
famous snapshot of those firemen raising that flag at Ground Zero. _
The very next day, I went out to my farm, and I have a couple hundred acres outside
of Nashville and Franklin, and I have this big flagpole with a big flag.
_ I bought it for my wife for Christmas, but she says I didn't buy it for her, I bought
it for myself.
_ I'm very patriotic, I love America. _
_ And my wife and I have been to Kenny Bumpport, we've known the Bushes for quite some time,
and I wanted a flag like the Bushes had in their front yard.
_ And, you know, and I've seen that flag fly so many times and put my hand over my heart,
but this one particular day, _ _ I had what we call in America a meltdown.
_ And I lost it on the spot.
_ _ _ _ And I went to the studio, which was about 15 minutes away, I wrote this piece of music
in about five minutes, and got some help from my good friend Wes King, who I wrote
This Is Your Time and many other [D] songs with, who's a historian and very, he's such a great songwriter.
And I said, Wes, this song has to be called There She Stands.
That's the only words I have, and it's got to be about our flag.
_ And before I sing this, I just want to say thank you, not only for all the prayers, obviously
from people here in America, but your concern from all the many countries around the world
for showing us compassion, reaching out to us in our loss.
