I know, it's really nice.
I think the spandex pants had a better career than I did.
[Bm] Once that [D] whole MTV thing happened, [N] essentially we were all kind of fucked.
We were all like, no, no, no, your hair's got to get bigger.
Next year the hair's getting bigger.
Pants are getting tighter.
[F] Yeah, [D#m] so, anyhow, [F#] we did an album called Thunder 7.
And when I, the first, I'm going to go back to the beginning, [G] the first Triumph album we ever made, we didn't have enough songs.
And Mike Levine said to me, can you like do a guitar piece?
And I said, yeah, sure.
Like, in fact, we only had the song Blinding [A] Lightshow.
I said, well, I got a song, I want a piece in E minor so we could just kind of put the guitar piece in the middle of the song that's in [D] E minor.
And he went, perfect, great, that's done.
So then we did the second album and we've been out on the road touring and we've got no time to be writing songs.
And Mike comes to me and goes, yeah, we need another guitar piece, Ricky.
And I go, okay, [N] man, I'll give you a guitar piece.
So it became a thing, it was like every album.
By the time we got to Thunder 7, I had a [F#m] situation where I had an engineer that was working for us at Metalworks and he had worked with [D] Glenn Gould.
Do you know who Glenn Gould is?
Like famous [E] classical piano player, unbelievable.
The kind of guy that would play, you know, the fourth movement of the [D] thing 15 times.
And then he [F#] would choose the tune he takes and edit them in order to [A#] just make it so that it was [E] like perfection.
And I went, okay, well, you know how to do that, that editing thing.
That's [N] great because I play like shit.
So what we'll do is I'll get like the first eight bars and then the next ten.
And so I [A] started to be able to do something I call writing [F] over your head.
Like I could write stuff that was better than I could [D#] play.
And all I [N] had to do was play it in little snips and then edit it all together.
And then we'd go out on the road and I had to learn the fucking thing.
And I'm making it up.
That's exactly what I did.
So this guitar piece that Dave and I are going to play for you now.
This was a [G] song that was on the Thunder 7 album and I played it in [D] every arena.
I think I probably played it here, [C#] whatever the arena [F#] was here.
So, and this is the Omni.
Is it still [A] there or is it torn down?
[N] It's gone.
Yeah, this is like heartbreaking for me.
Like I live, you know, I live up around Toronto and we played Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.
When it was blue, when it was blue.
And like a month ago, they knocked the fucking thing down.
[G#] It should feel so old.
Holy shit, the buildings we played there all the time.
Yeah, so when we played these buildings, of course, this was long before, you know,
you were allowed to smoke indoors and of course everybody would bring in.
So we'd get up on the stage.
And we'd get to like the middle of the set and it was time for the guitar player to come out
and do his self-indulgent twaddle.
You know, he's going to play his thing and the guys are going to go and have a beer.
And, you know, I'm in the laser cone, doing my guitar piece.
And everybody goes, oh, this is perfect.
Like this is like, the show's only going to get much better from here.
So this is the time to smoke the joint that we do.
So we'd get out these Jamaican [E] things.
[D#] Fire up these logs.
[F#] And the place would be filled with second-hand smoke.
And I would be up on stage going, wow, I'm getting [E] hungry.
[F#]
[N] Yeah.
So that's what would happen in the middle of this piece.
This is called [C#m] Midsummer Diner.
[C#] Hug [C#m]
