The next subject I wanted to talk about is connecting chord changes, something that I
get asked about a lot and [Bb] also that I see lacking in a lot of guitar players, a lot of students.
The main thing that you have to see first is what it is that's giving that series of
chords its sound.
[B] [Db]
[D] [Bb] [Ab] It's kind of voice leading, but also in the solo I call them guide tones because that's
kind of what I'm hearing in the background of [F] my solo.
[E] [F] [G]
[Eb]
[Bb] Arpeggios don't have to start from the root.
It's almost even better if [E] you practice it just trying to connect.
[Dbm] [Em] [G] [Ebm]
[Db] [Ab] [E]
But the main thing is to not let the line stop at any point and not let the chord changes
tell you when you're going to switch directions or how high you're going to play.
[A] [Ab]
[Dbm] Straight through two sets of two fives, [Bbm] playing through these modes and trying to get seamless
lines and getting long [F] lines.
[Gb]
[A] [Bb] [Db]
Forget about the [Ab] harmonic rhythm of that tune [A] and just try to create something that
works over the chord changes but goes beyond what you're given rhythmically.
[E] [Gbm]
[E] [G] [C]
[D] [Bb] [E]
[Bb] [Eb] [N]
