Hi, I'm Shannon [D] Heaton and I'm here to show you just one tune.
All you need is your instrument or even your voice alone and a bit of focus.
The tune of the month for December 2022 is Miss McLeod's Reel, a lovely old tune in G.
Whew, it's a busy end of year for me and sometimes when [G] I'm really slammed, I can find great
comfort and grounding in actually taking time out, even though I'm busy, to play through
one tune, maybe to learn a new tune or just to play through an old favorite, but to find
it in my hands, in my heart today.
So in case I'm meeting you in that kind of moment, here's Miss McLeod's Reel.
I'll play it once around and then I'll break it down phrase by phrase for easy learning or reviewing.
[Em]
[G] [E]
[G] [Gb] [G]
[E] [E]
[Gb] [E]
[Ab]
[G] [Gb] [E]
All right, [Ab] so here's the tune phrase by phrase.
Maybe learn to sing the tune before you go to try it on your instruments.
That way you're not spending your time getting it in your head and in your fingers and kind
of mucking about.
You learn the tune and then you go to play the tune.
Here you go.
One, [G] [Gb]
[Ab] two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18,
[Gb] This is the first phrase.
[G]
[Em] [Gb] [G]
[Ab] [Ab]
[E] [Em] [Ab]
So that's the A part one time around and now we're back to the beginning of the A part
the second time around.
Same thing.
One, [G] two,
[Gb] [Ab] [G]
[C] [N]
[G] [Ab]
[E] [Ebm] [B]
[Ab] So the first time through the A part, I took a breath after the A in the [G] second phrase.
[Em] [Ab] The second time through the A part, I rolled the A [G] instead.
[Gb] So whether you need the breath or not, melodic variation, breathing variation is great.
In the A part, the first time around, I breathed after [E] between [Bbm] the third phrase and the fourth phrases.
If you don't need that breath, [G] [Em] you could go to the downbeat of the fourth phrase and then
breathe after that E, which is what I did.
You might need to go back in the video to kind of decipher all of that and integrate
it, take your time with it, just presenting some options for breathing, which are also
really melodic variation ideas.
On to the B part of the tune.
[Ab] [Gb] [Ab] [A]
[Gb]
[E] [Gb] [Em]
[B] [E]
[Ab] That was the B part.
Let's do the B part again with a few different breathing ideas.
Simple.
Same changes as sort of in the A part.
One.
[Eb] [Gb] [G] [Eb]
[Gb]
[Ab] [E] [G]
[E]
[D] [Ab] All right.
So a few simple, simple options for you there, and hopefully a very clear and simple walkthrough
of this old chestnut.
Hope you enjoy it, and hope to see you here
