Okay, for those of you who are a little bit more advanced and I can just run through this
thing real quick, [D#] this is the video for you.
If [E] you want to learn Mississippi bit by [A] bit, then go see the other [Dm] video.
This is not the one for you.
[G] This is the one for the people who can figure out the stuff pretty much by listening to
[F#] it and a few guidelines.
And that's what this is, the guidelines.
So here we go.
[D#] Mississippi is in the key of D.
It's also drop D.
[D]
[F#] You need to keep a [D] constant thumb base.
[G] Pretty simple.
You go from a D down [D] here to a D up here.
[G] It'll sound like this.
You can slide a [D] lot too.
[G] And then we go to a D7 [Am] and to G.
[G]
Remember to [G] keep [E] the low E string on the fifth fret since we are playing this in drop
D.
[A] Then back to D [G] and G.
[D] D [G] and G.
[D] D and G.
[A] And then what I do here is
[Gm] I'm going up [G#] from
the second fret on the B string.
So it'd be [D] like that.
[G] And [F#] then I don't think this is really an A, but I'm going to call it that.
I play it.
This is a normal A.
[A] And this is the A I [F#m] play.
The only difference is I'm adding a second fret on the high E string.
[F#] Okay, so.
[D] [G] [A] [D] And then back to D.
So that's the verse.
D, [G] D7, G.
[D] D, [G] G.
D, G.
D, G.
[A] A [D] and D.
That's a whole [F#] verse for you.
Okay, then for that little part before the end of the verse, before the chorus I guess,
it goes to A.
[A#] I usually slide [Em] down from the seventh [A] fret.
[G] G, [A] A, [G] G, [A]
A [G] and G.
And then for the part that goes, for myself anymore, it goes G, [A] D, A.
So A and G.
[G] A and G.
[A] A [G] and G.
G, [A] D, A.
And [E] then to kill it off, you just go back to the way [D] you played it in the verse.
D, [G] D7, G.
[D] D, [G] G, [D] D [G] and G.
D, G,
[F#m] A [D] and D.
[F#] Anyway, you can finish it however you want.
If you come up with a nifty ending, that's great.
[G] I think he just finished it by playing the last few chords slower.
[F#] Okay, here's another thing.
You won't get this if you watch the other video on [F] this, if you watch the simple version.
This is something that you'll get exclusively from this [F#] video.
In the verse, when you change [D] from D to D7 [G] to G.
[A]
So, [D] you know, [A] [G]
[F] there's something kind [C] of neat you can do.
[F#] I tried this out one or two times in the video that I did, which was horrible.
Please, somebody, do this lesson, do the song better, and sing better than me, which is not hard.
I tell you this now.
But yes, for your own good and for the sake of the YouTube [A] community, cover [A#] this and do it well.
[F] All right, [D] but in that little gap where you go D, D7, G, [B] there's [F#] a neat little riff that
I put in.
[D]
[G] Oh, that was bad.
[G] [D#] It fills in real nice.
I'm sure I [Am] can come up with more, but that's the only one I have right now.
[G] How you do it is [Em] on the D string [D] here, I go [Cm] slide from the fourth to the seventh, [D#]
fourth
on [B] this string, [D] [F#]
seven [D] on the B string, then down to three on the B string.
[G] And I meet the very last one of those with the G on the E string.
[B] So seven, four, [D] seven, seven, three, three, [G] three.
[E] [G]
If you didn't catch that, watch it all again.
I know I'm not the greatest teacher, but hey, this is only [F#] my first instructory video.
[A] I'll make more in the future for other videos if you really, really want it.
The best [F#] thing you can do is go to Daddy Stovepipe's channel and watch every single one of his
videos and learn as much as you can from the man.
He is a blues [B] god.
Okay.
But yeah, that's the simplified version of Mississippi.
[G] You can find it on the Bootleg Series, Volume 8, Telltale Signs.
It's the very first track.
It's wonderful.
I recommend buying the whole album.
Bob Dylan is fantastic.
[A#] Anyway, there you have it.
[F#] Enjoy.
Happy playing.
Cover it, please.
