Mixolydian scale with open string technique chords
Start Jamming...
Hi, I'm Guido Bungenstock.
I'm a guitar player from Germany, and this is my first video tutorial.
The topic today is
playing an
A Mixolydian scale in a totally unusual way,
by using the open string technique and
hybrid picking.
So hybrid picking means playing with a plack and with fingers.
And for those of you who don't know exactly what means A Mixolydian,
it's actually really easy.
It's the fifth mode of the D Ionian scale.
So in other words,
it's a
major scale with a flat 7.
It sounds like this.
[A]
This is A [Bm] Mixolydian.
And the
run or the lick I'm going to play in a normal picking technique sounds like this.
[C#]
[A] So it's just a scale, nothing special about it.
Now I am going to play the same run
with the open string technique and the hybrid technique.
And I'm going to try
to let the string as long as possible.
I mean ring together.
I let ring together the open strings and the fretted notes.
And this gives me a little
kind of different sound, like a harp sound or something.
There it is.
[D#] [A]
[G] [A]
[Bm] [A]
[Em] [Am] [A]
So what I'm doing here, it's a little
unusual. And
I'm sorry, as I said, I'm playing the same note as [B] this [E] here,
[A] [G]
[A] but I'm trying
to combine the open strings and the fretted note.
So I start here on the open [G] B string.
[C#]
[G] Here are the first notes ringing together, D and E.
The D on the B and the E,
the open E string.
[C#m]
[Em] [G#m] Going back, [D] [G]
[A] [G]
nothing special.
[A] [G]
Now I try to
let the G string ring while I'm playing up
the scale.
Doing like this.
[A] [G]
[A] See?
[Em]
Instead of [A] playing A on the G [D] string,
open B,
[C#] C sharp on the G string,
[D] hammering to D,
[Em] open E string.
So this together sounds like this.
[D]
[A] [F#m] [G]
Again, [A]
[G]
[D] this really
nice chord sound.
Then
I'm switching to the
changing position here.
I go from the D on the G string to the F sharp on the G string.
[D#] Next note would be F sharp, G and
the open E string.
[G]
[Em]
[B] So G sharp on the G string,
G on the B [G] string and [Em] open E.
So this is a little
[G]
unusual way, of course, because you're going high,
but the notes are ringing lower.
This is a little
sounds totally irritating, or it feels irritating at the beginning.
[Em]
I'm gonna [G] pick with a plaque.
[Em]
With two fingers here.
So let's play it again.
[A] [G]
[D] [Em] Sorry again.
[A] [G]
[Em] Okay, [D] so then I'm going down the scale.
[G] [Em] I play the D.
[D] [G]
[A] D on the [G] D string and C sharp on the same string.
[Em] [Bm] After this I'm gonna play the B string.
[G]
[B] [Am]
[Em] [A#] Sorry [G] again.
[A]
[Em] Then the A note [D#m] on the 12th fret on the A string and the open G string.
[G] [Em]
Really nice chord [G] sound.
[C#] [G] Okay.
Then
I'm switching, I'm changing position to the F sharp [F#]
[E] on the A string.
Slide [F#] down
[E] from F sharp to E and
the open D string
[G] and the rest
[C#] [A]
[C#] G sharp, [B]
[A] a little [C#] triplet here.
[Am]
[D] [Em] [Am]
[C#]
[F#m] [G] [Am]
[A] And then ending up with a A7 9 chord in A.
So maybe this gives you a new
maybe a new direction to play a scale.
You can do this, of course, with other scales.
And
yeah, I hope you enjoy the first lesson and
have fun.
See you later.
Bye.
Bye.
