[E] What's up guys, my name is Cal and today I'm going to be teaching you how to play Float
On by Modest Mouse.
Probably their most popular song.
It's pretty fun to play.
The reason I'm doing it on acoustic is because I don't have access to my electric right now,
but it will [Bbm] probably sound best if you play it on electric and this will be an electric
guitar lesson, even though this is acoustic.
So anyway, it starts off on the 6th fret.
[Db] Basically bar the 6th fret on the G, B, and the E with your first finger.
[Bbm] And then you [B] take your second finger and add it on the 7th fret [Gb] B string.
So it starts open and then hammer on with your second finger on the 7th fret.
[Gbm] And
[Gb]
then you take [Dbm] your second finger off and you just [Bbm] have your first finger.
Then you take your second finger and put it back on the [Am] 7th and this time you also add
your third on [Ab] the 8th fret G [Ebm] string.
[B] And then you take both fingers off and you put your third on the 8th fret [Bbm] D string with
your first finger still barring on the 6th.
So all together it sounds like this.
[Gb]
[Bbm]
[Ebm]
[Bbm]
[D] And then back again.
Now it's kind of tricky not to hit the D string sometimes.
What I recommend is on your first finger when you're [Bbm] barring down, since you're always going
to be barring this down, basically just move it up a tiny bit so it just [Gb] lightly rests
on the D string [Abm] that you can hear that's muted so [D] when I hit it, it's not going to be, it
[Eb] won't be as [Em] audible if you accidentally hit it.
That's just a tip if you have trouble with that.
You may not.
So anyway, that's the intro riff and he does [Gb] this [Bb]
which [Ab] starts out on the 11th [Gb] fret with
your third finger and then [Abm] basically just lay that flat and you hit the B on the [Gb] 11th.
So then go to the 9th on the high E, back to the 11th, so [G] to [Abm] the 9th on the B [Bb] and then
you just basically just pick [G] the 11th a couple times.
So it [Gb] goes
[Abm] [Gb]
[Bb] [Gb]
[Abm] [Gb]
[Gm] [Gb]
[E] [B] And then the last time you basically [Gb] go, [Abm] [Bb]
[Abm] [Gb]
which is just 11th on the [Abm] B, 9th on [Bm] the B and then
on the 11th G, resolve on that note.
And that's that riff.
And then basically for the chorus section and some of the verse, it's the exact same
[Bbm] [Gb] as the intro, exact same chorus as the intro, except for this time you're just picking them.
So you just go
[Bbm]
[Ebm]
[Bbm]
[Gbm] and then you repeat that.
Now the only tricky part about that, the pattern is very simple.
You just do [Bbm] G, B, E and then back to the B.
So G, B, E, B, G, D, E, D.
[Ebm] And then same thing.
And then for the last one, it's slightly different.
[Bbm]
Which basically you start [Bb]
on the D to the [Db] G to the B, but instead of going to the high
E, you go back [Gb] to the G.
So you [Bbm] go D, G, B, G, and then all the way up to the high E and
then B, G, B.
So real slowly.
[Ab]
And then it [Gb] starts again.
[N] And so on and so forth.
And that's basically the entire song aside from the solo.
Again I usually don't do the solos.
If you guys request it enough, I will put that in a separate video just because it takes
usually longer than this whole entire video combined.
But it's a pretty quick and easy way to play Float On by Modest Mouse.
It's really fun to jam to and I definitely recommend learning
