[G#m] I'm [F#m] going out on a highway, gonna listen to them big [E] trucks whine
[C#m] [E] I'm [F#m] going out on a highway, gonna listen to them big [E] trucks whine
[B] That white [A] freightliner's gonna steal away [E] my line
[C#m] [E] [C#m]

[F#m] [E]
[A] It's bad news from Houston, half of my friends [E] have died
[A]
It's bad news from Houston, half of my [E] friends have died
[B]
That white freightliner's gonna steal away [E] my line
[C#m] [E]
[A] [E] [F#m] [E]
[F#m] [Em] [C#m]
[E]
[G#m] [E]
[A] New Mexico's alright, some people there will treat [E] you fine
New
[F#m] Mexico ain't bad boy, some [A] people there will treat [E] you fine
That
[B] white freightliner's [A] gonna steal away [E] my line
[A] Lord I'm gonna ramble, tell them to get [E] back from where I came
[A] Well Lord I'm gonna ramble, tell them to get back from [E] where I came
[C#m]
[B] That white freightliner's gonna steal away [E] my pain
[C#m] So [F#m]
[C#m]
[E] where are your main [A] points of contact on the body?
So [A#] I'm, my, this part of my hand and my wrist is kind of resting
either on the low strings or on the bridge back here when [B] I'm playing leads
Are you physically touching or is it more of just like
you can kind of feel it lightly [C#] grazing there or are you actually resting?
It's physically touching but I'm not like pressing it down
[Gm]
So it's just kind of resting
But then when I play rhythm my wrist comes up and I'm not like It's loose
It's not touching [C#] anywhere, yeah
Got it, so these are kind of like two modes that you click into Yeah, basically
And you can switch between the two of them on the fly
Yeah, I don't really think about it
So when you're doing like the freightliner tune then
there's a lot of the bass chord, bass chord type of comping, [E] right?
And that's the looser form?
Yeah, so then [F#m] if I go into like the cross picking
[G] [A]
[F#m]
[A] [F#m] then my wrist [C#] comes down
Got it, so the comping form then or the rhythm playing form
that's really only, the contact is just up in the forearm here on [B] the body?
Yeah, yeah, basically
So how do you sense where the, how do you hit those strings
or how do you develop that?
Just slowing it down and trying to simplify I guess
Getting like a really, [Em] I like just trying to do it slowly
and get really [B] even bass notes and strum Got it
And [C#m] then just building up that habit over [F#m] time
But you, was there a point where you felt like the accuracy
like you'd go for a certain bass note and hit the wrong string?
Yeah, [G#m] definitely I had a lot of that going on
but I've just done it so much now
and kind of just been aware of it and focused on it when [B] I've played
[G] that it's not really a [D] problem anymore too much
So your confidence level is pretty high now
when you go for a certain bass note that [G] you're going to hit
Yeah, every now and then I'll like hit the wrong string
or like play it out of time
but it doesn't really happen too much anymore
Got it, and then switching from that, the less anchored form
to the [B] lead playing form, the cross picking form
What would be an example of a phrase where you would have to go
from one to the other?
Like in that tune even
[E] Yeah, so maybe [B] like if I was [E] doing a fill
[A] Like, running out on a highway, gotta listen to them big [E] trotters
flying through the wind
So [A] there I'm [G] just switching really fast
And it's this kind of thing that's happening, right?
Yeah, it's just
The wrist bending
Yeah, a little bit
It's bending like this, like a motorcycle Yeah
And you just latch right into that
Yeah, it's just [A] automatic at this point
[G#] [F#m]
[C#m] [E]
[A] Running [E]
