Holy shit.
Okay.
So for those of you who don't know what this is about a few weeks ago
I released an original song called Victoria's Secret.
It was inspired by a young girl
I babysit who was feeling insecure about her body and it was a personal song for me because when I was her age I
compared my body to the one body type companies like Victoria's Secret
strategically advertised and that's when I started developing
eating disorders and body dysmorphia
So my goal was to make sure her and her friends don't go through the same thing that I went through.
I never expected what happened
next.
People on TikTok started using the song to tell their own stories.
The song made it to the Billboard charts
and it's playing on the radio all in a matter of like two weeks.
To be clear my intention was never to
take down a brand.
I am just a songwriter.
Like I sing about my truth and then I hope that people relate but it is pretty badass
that we all got the attention of a CEO of a billion dollar company.
So in their posts, they're asking to bring me into the conversation.
It's not like I'm singing about something new.
Did companies like Victoria's Secret contribute to my body issues?
Yes, but you shouldn't need a viral song or a blue checkmark for your voice to be heard.
It takes a village not an influencer.
I don't feel comfortable
speaking on behalf of an entire generation of manipulative
non-inclusive marketing culture and I do not want to be the face of any companies
we've changed at.
So since Victoria's Secret is paying attention to my account,
I am asking anyone who feels like they never had a voice or ever had a say in the matter to comment on this video.
You let them know what you need to [Bm] feel safe and
represented and comfortable [B] and beautiful in today's society.
Victoria's Secret, if you're watching this, you said in this letter that you're committed to building a community where
everyone feels seen.
So
Okay.
