_ _ _ Hello, and welcome to the Nate McDowell Music Workshop.
Today we're going to look at a hymn named Amazing Grace.
This is a contemporary version named Grace Like Rain.
For today's short video, I'm going to play the verse and chorus of the song as our intro.
Then we're going to look at the four chord pattern that repeats.
And that's it.
There are four chords to this song.
After we've gone through those, we're going to do as our outro, the last verse and chorus
of the song and enjoy it some more.
This song is Grace Like Rain.
_ [Dm] _ _
[Bb] _ _ [F] _ _ [Am] _ _ [Dm] _ _
[Bb] _ _ [F] _ _ [Am] _ _ [Dm] _ _
[Bb] _ _ [F] _ _ [Am] _ _ [Dm] _ _
[Bb] _ _ [F] _ _ [Am] _ _ [Dm] _ _
[Bb] _ _ _ [Am] _ _ _ [Dm] Grace [Bb] _ like rain [Am] falls down on me.
[Dm] All [Bb] _ _ [F] _ _ [Am] _ _ [Dm] _ _
[Bb] _ _ [F] right.
[Am] _ _ [Dm] _ _
_ _ _ _ So Grace Like Rain, as I explained, we have four chords and we're going to break those down.
Our first chord is D minor.
D minor is going to be played as follows in the diagram there.
[G] So we begin this [D] with our open D string.
_ [Ab] Then we're going to play our middle finger on the second fret of the G [D] string.
Our pinky plays the third fret of the B string.
And last, our index finger is on the first fret [Gm] of the E string.
[Dm] _ _ _
Okay.
[D] We're using the tips of our fingers and we are as close as we can be against the fret _
[Dm] to give a smooth sound without buzz.
When you can go to this chord quickly, you're ready to move on [G] to number two, which is a
B flat [Bb] chord.
B flat chord is played here.
This [Gb] is what's called a power chord for B flat.
[Bb] Your ring, your pink, your, oh goodness, your index finger is on the first fret of the A string.
Your ring finger is on the third fret of the D string.
And last, your pinky is tucked behind that ring finger on the third fret of the G string.
_ These three strings are the only ones you're playing.
That's what is indicated by the X's on that diagram.
You're not playing any of those three strings.
That's [E] it.
So we've had our D minor and then our B flat.
[F] Our next chord is F. _
So rather than the full bar, we're just going to play the tips of
four fingers here.
So we're going to play our index finger on the first fret of our E string.
Our ring finger is on the third fret of the A string.
[C]
Our pinky is tucked right behind our ring finger on the third fret of the D [F] string.
And last, our middle finger [C] settles on the second fret of the G string.
Okay?
So we've had our D minor chord, B flat, [F] and then F.
_ Last four of four is the A [Am] minor chord.
_ We're going to begin this drum with the open [A] A string.
Our middle finger will take the second fret of the D string with our ring finger tucked
behind it on the second fret of the G string.
Our index finger is on the first fret of the B string.
And [Am] last, we're hitting the open E string. _
Okay?
_ [C] And for this song, when I get to the A minor, which is the last chord in the chain, I normally
strum it [Am] once and let it ring.
_ Because it's the end of a line of the verse of the chorus.
And the song, I think the song does well breathing there for a [D] moment.
So let's talk about our strum pattern now.
I'm using the same strum pattern on the entire [Dm] song.
_ [Bb] _
_ [F] _ _ [Am] Okay?
So, our actual strum directions [Dm] would be, we're going down, up, down.
Up, down, up, down.
Up, down, up, down.
[Bb] Up, down, up, down.
[F] Up, down, up, down.
[Am] Up, down.
Letting that A minor ring out.
[D] So, the tap is literally the three fingers that are not involved in holding the pick.
I'm using them to [C] just tap the pick guard as my hand comes down naturally to help point
out the beat.
It would be the equivalent of the snare drum on that [Dm] back beat.
_ [Bb] _ _ _
_ _ [Am] There you go.
So, [D] for our outro to this short video today, I'm going to do the last verse in the chorus
of this great hymn, this version called Grace Like Rain. _ _
[Bb] _ _ [F] _ _ [Am] _ [Dm] When we've [Bb] been there [F] ten [Am] thousand years, [Dm] bright [Bb] shining as [F] the sun, _ [Am] _ we've no [Bb] less days
[F] to sing [Am] your praise [Dm] than when [Bb] we first [F] begun.
[Am] _ _ [Dm] _
[Bb] Hallelujah, [F] grace like rain [Am] falls down on [Dm] me.
[Bb] Hallelujah, all [F] my stains are [Am] washed away.
They're [Dm] washed away. _
[Bb] _ _ [F] _ _ [Am] They're [Dm] washed away.
_ _ _ [G] Thank you very much.

B flat chord is played here.
This [Gb] is what's called a power chord for B flat.
