_ _ [Gbm] Hey everybody, Max Rich here and that's Natural Woman by Aretha Franklin.
One of my favorite Aretha songs, man.
It's [Fm] got an incredible chord progression, _ amazing feel and just a beautiful [G] melody all
the way [Eb] around.
Incredibly catchy melody as [Em] well.
What you heard [F] was me kind of [Bb] looping the chord progression and then playing [Gb] the vocal
melody on top, something I absolutely love to do because _ I just love hearing melodies
on top of guitar.
_ _ You can [Bb] sort of emulate that sometimes [Ab] by playing a bass note, you know, like [C] sort of like_
_ _ [D] _
[Am] Right?
And you can do it as a solo guitar but [F] it doesn't sound as full.
You don't [Gb] get as rich of a sound.
You can't get [F] a bunch of variables that you can if you use a looper pedal.
And so that's [Gb] what I really like to do and that's what I'm going to show you today.
[C] In addition to that, obviously, you'll get [Gb] like the chords to the song and the melody
itself and, you know, there's a bridge and everything involved as well.
_ _ [Gb] But the main thing I want to do is go over the harmony, talk about the chords, the feel
[Eb] of the song, meaning like the rhythm, and the melody itself and break down each phrase
because the one thing that I really want to get [F] across is that what makes a really good
guitar player all the way around is learning how [D] to play vocal [B] melodies.
And the reason for that is when [E] we're soloing, when we're coming up with licks, when we're
coming up with something that [Fm] we need [B] to be catchy or something [Gb] we want to like stick
in somebody's ear and stay there, _ there's nothing better than learning vocal melodies
to learn [Em] how to do that.
Because, you know, [Fm] if you're singing your favorite song, you can always sing the chorus,
[E] you hear the chorus, you [F] instantly recognize the melody, and there's a [C] reason for that.
It's because melodies are simplistic and [Eb] they're repetitive and they have a really, really good rhythm.
And if you combine those [C] elements, then [Abm] you can get something really catchy [G] and something
that will like just hook whoever's listening.
[Gb] And learning how to play [A] them on guitar is just, you know, invaluable for your own songwriting
and for future purposes.
So [Gb] we're going to do all that stuff in the context of Natural Woman, so don't [Bm] go anywhere.
