[B] In [A]
this arrangement of Nearer My God To Thee, in both violin parts, this is a duet version,
there will be some fingerings [N] that incorporate both the first, second, and third positions.
But as I go along in both violin parts, I will give some alternative fingerings so that
you can stay either in just exclusively the first and third position or exclusively first position.
So let's get started with the first violin part.
We are in the first position [G#] and we have the C sharp.
And of course in this instance, the first violin is stating the melodic line and the
second violin will be playing underpinning in harmony.
So the first violin has the melody here.
And basically I would go for a fairly broad bow.
[Bm] [Am]
[C#] Like that.
A lot of the idea of whole bow, half half, whole.
And one thing I'd like to point out in measure two before we get into the fingerings is initially
when you're starting, we have the whole bow [C#] and [Bm]
then we have a fairly good amount of bow,
maybe two thirds of the bow.
[Am] These notes.
[F#m] And then in measure two, we have what I call kind of a zigzag bowing.
So instead of doing something like this, [F#]
kind of [Bm] using equal [Am] amounts of bow, I like to think
of it as a longer bow stroke.
[B] [Am] A bow and then [F#] a zigzag.
We use just about, oh maybe a quarter of the bow.
And then [G#] [A] [C#] you work toward the frog.
Let me show that to you again.
We'll take it from the downbeat of the first bar.
[B] [Am]
[F#m] And as I've shown in previous videos, the downbow, [A#] you can think of a slight rolling
motion between your elbow and wrist, kind of a flowing motion.
And this facilitates then the upbow and you use the wrist as a kind of impetus.
Let's do it again from the downbeat.
[Gm] [Fm]
[F#]
[Em] And then we're at the frog.
Now let's talk about fingerings a little bit.
The opening is done in first [G#] position.
[C#] You can play the open A string.
I just preferred the fourth finger, but there's no reason you can't use the open A.
[F]
[F#]
And [C] then here, instead of shifting up, [Em] you can.
[A] [E] [A] So [B] it is possible to do this in [G] first position.
There are a couple of other [F#] instances too we'll [D#] talk about.
Let's take it again a little bit under tempo [B] from the beginning.
[C#m]
[Bm] [A]
[F#]
[E]
[A] [F#] [Bm]
And then a breath.
[G] [Bm]
[C] [A#]
