_ _ _ _ _ _ Hey guys, my name is Daniel and today I'm going to show you a lick helping you to develop
your legato technique on the bass.
It's going to be in the [D] key of B minor.
_ _ I'm going to play a really short groove, then I'll play the lick and then we'll break it down. _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [Em] _ _ _
_ [B] _ [N] _ _ _ Now _ do note that I am playing a 5-string bass, so this top string is a B-string.
For all you 4-string players out there, just ignore my top string and just look at the bottom string. _
I'm going to break this lick into two sections.
So here's the first part of the lick.
[F#] _ [A] _ [A#] _ _ [F#m] _ [A#] _ _ _
_ _ I'll play that really slow.
I'm on the A-string on the 9th fret starting on F sharp, sliding to a [F#] G.
_ [G] _ _ [A] A, B [A#] flat, [D] D, _ G [F#] flat, _ _ _ [A] A, _ _ sliding to [A#] B flat.
_ _ _ 1, 2, [F#] 3, 4.
_ [G] _ [A] _
[A#] _ _ _ [A] _ [A#] _ _ _ _
_ _ [Am] Now this first part of the lick is actually implying chord V in the key of B minor.
So chord V in the key of B minor would be F sharp _ 7th.
[F#] This chord here.
[A] _ _
_ _ [D] And what we're actually playing is a G melodic minor arpeggio. _ _ _
[F#] _ _ And what that is is actually an altered, that gives this F sharp [F#m] 7th, _ this implied
[G] F sharp 7th an altered sound.
_ If you're a bit unsure at this point of any of the terminology that I'm using, just do
a quick Google search and that should clear things up.
_ Here's the second part of the lick.
_ It's based largely around the B minor pentatonic scale.
_ _ [A] _ _ [G] _
[F#] _ [E] _ [D] _ [B] _ _ [E] _ _ _
[D] _ _ _ _ _ I'll _
[A] _ _ _ _ [G] _ _ [F#] _ _
[E] _ [D] _ _ [B] _ _ _ [G#m] _ _
_ _ _ [Gm] play it with the first _ part that I've shown you.
1, 2, 3, 4.
_ _ _ [D] _ _
_ _ [Gm] _ _ [A] _ _ [G] _ _
[E] _ _ [D] _ [B] _ _ [E] _ _ _
[D] _ _ Full speed.
1, 2, 3, 4.
_ _ [Gm] _
[D] _ _ _ _ [G#m] _ _ _
1, 2, 3, 4.
_ [G] _
[D] _ _ _ _ [B] _ _ _ [D] _
_ I'm going to play this lick over the backing track.
I'm going to play a short 8 bar solo and then on the 8th bar I'll play this lick.
The backing track uses the chords E [Em] minor _ and [G#] _
_ _ [Bm] B. _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [F#m] _ _ _ _ _ _
[Bm] _ _ _ [A] _ [Bm] _ _ _ [A] _
_ [B] _ _ [D] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [E] _ [D] _ _ _
_ _ [Em] _ [A] _ _ _ [B] _ _
[Bm] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [E] _ _ _ _ So make sure you're comfortable with that in all keys.
_ Once you've done that, make it your own.
Have fun with it.
Thanks for watching. _
