Nirvana, produced for the most part by Chicago noise rock king Steve Albini, in utero sounds nothing like a record made by millionaire rock stars, whatever the band members current financial status may be.
But what does the real world make of this album?
Well, we took some copies to a college campus in New York City and asked some students for critical feedback.
Here's the verdict.
[F]
[Eb] [Bb] Are you a fan of Nirvana?
[Eb] Sure.
Yes, I am.
[F] What do you like about them?
[C] Just the [Eb] way that they're not [Fm] into what everybody else is into, you know, they [Eb] just sort of do their own thing.
I respect that in anybody.
[Fm] [Eb] Are you a Nirvana fan?
Oh?
[Cm] Nirvana.
[Eb] Nirvana?
Yeah.
[C] What's that?
[E] Never heard of Nirvana?
No, I [Eb] haven't.
No.
What kind of music do you listen to?
I usually listen to club music.
Did you know that they have a new [F] album out?
[C]
Yeah, [Ab] I know.
[Bb] I haven't heard it though.
Could you [Ebm] take this home [F] and listen to it and then come back [Eb] tomorrow at the same time and tell me [Bbm] what you think?
Sure.
All right.
[Fm] Yeah, no problem.
Sure.
[Ebm] I work here.
So I'm here [Cm] every day.
[Gb] I'd love to.
[Ab] [Gb] [A] [Ebm] [Ab] [A] [Abm]
Tell me, how [Gbm] did you like [Ebm] In Utero?
Oh, it was great.
It was really good.
[Ab]
[A] So very similar to the first [Ab] album.
[Eb] And [Abm] I got a couple [A] of songs that [E] would be playing on the [B] radio.
They're gonna be hits.
[Ab] [A] Third track, [Bb] I think.
Heart [Eb] Shaped Box, probably [Gbm] on MTV or [Ab] something.
[A] And I [Ab] liked [Am] the ninth track, [Ab] Pennyroyal [Gb] Tea, which I really thought was good.
There are a couple of [E] songs that [Gb] I could listen [F] to [Ab] and I enjoyed the music to.
[F]
[Gb] [Eb] [A] [Eb] [Gb]
[A] [Ebm]
[G] [Eb] [Am] A lot of [Gb] the lyrics I thought were just [Ab] thrown in.
[A] I mean, [Eb] they could have [B] deeper meaning and I tried [Eb] to really analyze them.
[A] But some of [Ebm] these lyrics just seemed like, [Eb] I think if I was [A] stoned when I [Abm] listened to it, I might have [Ebm] liked it better.
[Eb]
But I don't do [A] that anymore.
[Eb] I listened to some of it.
The first couple of songs were [A] pretty good.
The fourth song, Rate [Ab] Me, I was not too happy [B] with that song.
[Eb] I found it kind of [Gb] offensive.
[Abm]
[B] [Eb] [Gb] [Abm]
[B] [Ebm] I prefer the beginning part of [Abm] the album, especially [B] Rate Me.
[Ab] Rate [B]
[Eb] [Gb] [Abm] Me was just, that's [Ebm] just like, [Abm] I think they just, they want controversy with that song.
Because all it is, it had no real meaning to it, I thought, other than it was just really blatant and loud.
Dumb was really good.
Rate Me was really [Db] good and Hot [Ab] Cheet Box was excellent.
[E] [C] [Db]
All [Ab] of them had a hype tempo at the [E] beginning [Db] of the album.
All of them were great.
And then it [Ab] mellowed out around the middle and then [F] at the end it hypes [C] you back up [Db] again.
It was a perfect [Abm] arrangement on it also.
Scentless Apprentice [Em] was good.
[Db] I think they should open with Scentless Apprentice.
Francis [Ab] Farmer, Half Revenge, yeah, was also good, but I don't know who [Db] Francis Farmer is.
I think if [Gb] I knew who Francis Farmer [Ab] was or what that meant, [Bb] I would [E] have enjoyed it more.
Would you recommend it [Db] to your friends?
Sure, definitely.
[E] If they have the first album, they'll enjoy this one.
It [Abm] was pretty good.
It's not what I usually listen to, [E] but I'd listen to it again.
Nirvana, buy [Db] it.
Get it.
Can I get another one?
[Ab] Good advice.
Nirvana will be starting a U.S. tour next month.
[Bb] Do try to catch them.
In Washington, meanwhile, the band Out Of [A] Chord.
With their faces currently gracing the covers of more than half a dozen magazines right now, Nirvana is back on the scene in a major way.
The band's new album In Utero will debut at number one on next week's Billboard chart.
And when the lads passed through New York City last week, they stopped by the MTV studios to talk about the record
and to talk about some of the things fans have been saying about it on MTV News.
And here they are.
[Eb] [Gb] [A]
[Ebm] [Eb] [Am] A lot [Gb] of the lyrics I thought were just [Ab] thrown [Am] in.

[A] But some of [Ebm] these lyrics just seem like, [Gbm] I think if I was stoned when [Bb] I listen to it, I might like it [G] better.
[N] But I don't do that anymore.
That's it.
I'm in college.
It's target marketing.
The [F] first couple of songs were pretty [A] good.
The [Bbm] fourth song, Rape Me, I was [Ab] not too happy with that song.
[Ebm] I found it kind of offensive.
[Abm]
[Ebm] [Gb] It's an [Abm]
anti [Ebm] -rape song.
[Ab] I don't know.
I [B] just thought, [Eb] I get tired of people [Gb] thinking, [Ab] trying [B] to put too much meaning [Eb] into my lyrics, you [Ebm] know.
It's being too, [Ab] not [B] making enough sense, you [Eb] know.
So I decided to be really blunt [Db] and bold.
[Ab]
But we [Db]
had an idea of a sound that we've been wanting for a [Bbm] long time, you [Ab] know.
[Bb] Because of Steve Alvini's production from one of the past, [Abm] like, three years.
It's just that [Ab] sound that we really like.
We thought that sounded so natural and real.
It [A] has a really beautiful ambience [Eb] to it.
[A] [Eb]
[Ebm] [Ab] On the record it says [A] recorded [Dbm] by.
It doesn't say [B] produced by.
That's E.Ethic. He's like, Mr.

Yeah, [Bm] but we gave him two million dollars.
That's true.
[Fm] Up until now, Kurt Cobain has been the musical [E] force behind Nirvana, writing [Eb] all the music and lyrics to their [Dbm] songs.
But for the track, Scentless Apprentice on their new album, all [Ebm] three members collaborated [Ab] for the very first time.
Is this a trend that will [Dbm] continue?
Hell yes.
It takes the [A] pressure off [Fm] of me.
[Abm] Dave [Bb] came up with the drum beat.
And we just built the song off of the drum.
[G] And the riff.
And the riff, yeah.
[Fm] He came up with the drum beat and then he showed me the riff, you know.
And it was really simple.
And we thought, well, this could work.
And I was thinking, [N] this is kind of bonehead.
And I thought, we'll work on it.
And [Ab] it turned out great.
And [Abm] now I'm excited about it because now we can write [G] together even more.
We're really [N] passive aggressive people.
We like to complain to [G] each other very often.
That's probably why we [N] survived.
We should go into therapy, all of us.
Sit down with a therapist.
No way.
We should just bitch about each other in articles, you know, separately.
Yeah, read the book.
[E]
Read the book.
I know.
Yeah.
[F] [Eb]
Nirvana's authorized book, Come As You Are, filled with [E] intimate [Fm] details of the trio and their rise to the [E] top,
[Eb] is just as revealing to the [Ab] band as it is to their fans.
I learned a [Eb] lot from that book.
[F] Yeah.
I learned a lot from [Eb] almost, you know, the first two [F] chapters.
I just [E] shut up [Eb] sometimes.
[G] Nirvana, great record, but you've got to see them live.

[Ab] _ [Gb] _ [A] _ [Ebm] _ [Ab] _ [A] _ [Abm]
[F] _ _ _
[Gb] _ _ _ [Eb] _ _ [A] _ [Eb] _ [Gb] _
_ _ _ [A] _ _ _ [Ebm] _ _
_ [G] _ [Eb] _ [Am] A lot of [Gb] the lyrics I thought were just _ [Ab] thrown in.
[Eb] _
But I don't do [A] that anymore.
[Eb] I listened to some of it.
The first couple of songs were [A] pretty good.
The fourth song, Rate [Ab] Me, I was not too happy [B] with that song.
[Eb] I found it kind of [Gb] offensive.
_ [Abm] _ _
_ [B] _ _ [Eb] _ _ [Gb] _ _ [Abm] _
_ _ [B] _ _ [Ebm] _ I prefer the beginning part of [Abm] the album, especially [B] Rate Me.
[Ab] Rate _ [B] _
_ _ [Eb] _ _ [Gb] _ [Abm] Me was just, _ that's [Ebm] just like, _ [Abm] I think they just, they want controversy with that song.
Because all it is, it had no real meaning to it, I thought, other than it was just really blatant and loud.
Dumb was really good.
Rate Me was really [Db] good and Hot [Ab] Cheet Box was excellent.
[E] _ _ [C] _ [Db] _
All [Ab] _ _ of them had a hype tempo at the [E] beginning [Db] of the album.
[Ab] _ Good advice.
_ [Eb] _ [Gb] _ _ _ _ [A] _ _
_ [Ebm] _ _ _ _ [Eb] _ [Am] A lot [Gb] of the lyrics I thought were just _ [Ab] thrown [Am] in.
I mean, [Eb]
they could have [Ebm] deeper meaning, and I tried to really analyze them.
[A] But some of [Ebm] these lyrics just seem like, [Gbm] I think if I was stoned when [Bb] I listen to it, I might like it [G] better.
[N] But I don't do that anymore.
That's it. _ _
I'm in college.
It's target marketing.
The [F] first couple of songs were pretty [A] good.
The [Bbm] fourth song, Rape Me, I was [Ab] not too happy with that song.
[Ebm] I found it kind of offensive.
_ [Abm] _ _
_ _ _ [Ebm] _ [Gb] It's an [Abm]
anti _ _ [Ebm] _ _ -rape song.
_ [Ab] I don't know.
I [B] just thought, [Eb] I get tired of people [Gb] thinking, _ [Ab] trying [B] to put too much meaning [Eb] into my lyrics, you [Ebm] know.
It's being too, _ [Ab] not [B] making enough sense, you [Eb] know.
So I decided to be really blunt [Db] and bold.
_ [Ab] _ _
But _ _ we _ [Db]
had an idea of a sound that we've been wanting for a [Bbm] long time, you [Ab] know.
[Bb] Because of Steve Alvini's production from one of the past, [Abm] like, three years. _ _ _
It's just that [Ab] sound that we really like.
We thought that sounded so natural and real.
It [A] has a really beautiful ambience [Eb] to it.
_ _ _ _ _ [A] _ [Eb] _ _
[Ebm] _ _ _ [Ab] _ On the record it says [A] recorded [Dbm] by.
It doesn't say [B] produced by.
That's E.Ethic. He's like, Mr.
Ethics.
Yeah, [Bm] but we gave him two million dollars.
That's true.
[Fm] _ _ _ Up _ _ until now, Kurt Cobain has been the musical [E] force behind Nirvana, writing [Eb] all the music and lyrics to their [Dbm] songs.
But for the track, Scentless Apprentice on their new album, all [Ebm] three members collaborated [Ab] for the very first time.
Is this a trend that will [Dbm] continue?
_ _ Hell yes.
It takes the [A] pressure off [Fm] of me.
_ [Abm] Dave [Bb] came up with the drum beat.
_ And we just built the song off of the drum.
And _ [Abm] now I'm excited about it because now we can write [G] together even more.
We're really [N] passive aggressive people.
We like to _ _ complain to [G] each other very often.
That's probably why we [N] survived.
We should go into therapy, all of us.
Sit down with a therapist.
No way.
We should just bitch about each other in articles, you know, separately.
Yeah, read the book.
_ [E] _ _
Read the book.
I know.
Yeah.
_ [F] _ [Eb]
Nirvana's authorized book, Come As You Are, filled with [E] intimate [Fm] details of the trio and their rise to the [E] top,
[Eb] is just as revealing to the [Ab] band as it is to their fans.
I learned a [Eb] lot from that book.
[F] Yeah. _
I learned a lot from [Eb] almost, you know, the first two [F] chapters.
I just [E] shut up [Eb] sometimes.
_ [G] _ Nirvana, great record, but you've got to see them live.
The band will start a U.S. tour at the Arizona State Fair in Phoenix on October 18th,
then move on to Albuquerque on the 19th, and will be
