Start Jamming...
That's when we first collaborated doing an Alice in Chains cover and somebody said,
hey, you guys should start a band.
And by golly, we did.
[E]
[D] Our next guest is a bass player, [D] songwriter, rock and roll hall of famer,
and a founding member of Seattle legends Nirvana.
His new band is called Third Secret.
We're going to play a little snippet of their [F] new video.
If [A#]
[C#] I'd have seen your [D#] face before, I know I [F#] would [A#] remember.
The future [C#] still remains [D#] unknown.
What [G#m] we are.
Right now [D] we've got an incredible [Em] guest.
It's Chris Novoselic from [E] the band Nirvana [B] and the new band Third Secret,
[E] who are about to drop their second album.
Chris, it's great to see you.
How you doing, [B] man?
I'm doing great.
Thanks for having [E] me on the show.
We're very excited about this.
We're pumped about this new record.
It's [B] called The Second Third Secret that's coming out.
And for people that are watching, that are just discovering the band [A] for the first time,
can you talk about how you [B]
and two of the guys from [E] Soundgarden, Matt Cameron and Kim [F#] Thyle,
ended up [G#m] putting this great band [B] together?
Well, it [E] started like 22 years ago.
Him [F#] and Bubba and I were jamming with [B] Alfredo Hernandez, who was in AIS.
[F#] And we were just jamming.
And then [B] one [E] thing led to another.
I moved out of Seattle.
And then it was like during the [B] pandemic, I was cleaning [E] my house and going through old boxes of CDs and [A] VHS tapes.
And I found this CD of [B] the jams we did.
And I got a hold of Kim and Bubba and said, hey, we should start [B] playing.
And Matt was [E] open, Matt Cameron, and I invited [B] Jillian from Giants in the [G#m] Trees.
And we just started [A] jamming.
And then one thing [E] led to another.
And we made the [F#] first Third Secret record.
But now we have the second Third Secret.
Which is really cool.
And you've let me hear some stuff in advance, which is incredible, like Ditch [E] and 10 new songs.
But can you talk to me?
I know [G#m] there was also Roots and you guys jamming together.
You ended [E] up, was one of the first performances you [A] guys did involved with the Alice in Chains livestream [B] that was like a
That's right.
[A] That's it.
And so [C#m] then
[B] we [A] played at this Mo-Pop tribute [Bm] to Alice in Chains.
And we played [F#] the song Drone off like the really recent Alice in Chains record.
So Kim and I and Jillian and Jennifer, [B] that's when we [A] first collaborated [Em] doing an Alice in Chains [F#] cover.
[Em] And somebody said, hey, you guys [C#] should start a band.
And by golly, we did.
I [Em] love it.
I got to say, one of the great things when you guys got inducted [E] to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,
and now you have it with your new band is you [Em] guys brought out all these great female singers to front Nirvana at that time.
And now [E] you have these great female singers in Third [Bm] Secret.
What is it about working with these women [Am] and putting out [E] that as opposed to being in maybe traditionally more of these [Bm] male dominated Seattle bands?
I [E] think you hear all these great female voices.
Yeah, that's a good question.
[Bm] And I haven't put a lot of thought into it.
So, you know, [A] you got to give it to Jennifer and [Em] Jillian because they have some pretty big shoes to fill.
[Bm] And somebody even said that they got a lot of [E] balls.
[Em] One of the interesting things about this new record you're going to release [Am] is that Matt Cameron [Em] actually sings on the record, which is great.
I mean, I've got a preview of it.
It's awesome to hear him singing.
Talk to [Dm] me about that because people know he's a great drummer, but Matt Cameron singing, I was [Am] so knocked out by that and surprised.
[Bm] Matt has made his own solo records.
He made a record with the late Taylor Hawkins.
[Am] So he's just [E] he's he contributes songs to Pearl Jam because he's a drummer Pearl Jam, right?
And he's they're they're putting out a record and they're going to do some shows.
And [Em] Matt is creative.
And so he came to Third Secret [Bm] with songs.
[B] And we're like, yeah, these are [Em] great songs.
We started doing these songs and he was showing us the songs and, you know, doing the vocals behind the drums.
And it's just kind of like, you know, that works.
And we Julian started singing with Matt.
And then I'm a big we're all pretty reckless fans.
And Matt and Kim have played with pretty reckless before.
And so we invited Taylor Momsen to do the vocals.
And so she's she's on the record, too.
She's doing a guess why we absolutely adore Taylor.
We love Taylor.
And I'm sure she was freaking out when you reached out to her to do that.
She was probably [Em]
mind blown.
Yeah, I mean, she's an artist.
She's an artist in her in her own [E] right.
And her and Ben in the band are just they're really [F#] good.
Like, I'm a big aren't they incredible?
And they keep getting better for sure.
And I know that [Am] when you're a musician, music kind of takes over your entire life.
But [Bm] when you have some free time, I always like to ask,
what are some hobbies you [Am] do outside of music?
[Em] Oh, that is a good one.
Well, now that it's springtime, well, it's [E] a happy solstice, [Em] by the way.
OK, thank you.
I watch those kind of things [A] because, you know, I do.
I work in the garden a lot.
I do gardening.
I fly [Em] a plane.
[G] I play a accordion.
Oh, I [B] have rest rescue animals like donkeys and horses and goats.
And a juarizo.
Oh, my God.
I'm so jealous.
A rescue?
Yeah.
Do you know what a juarizo is?
[Em] Mm-mm.
The father is a llama and the mother is an alpaca.
[A] Oh.
So it can happen.
So the [Em] daddy llama looked at mom alpaca said, hey, [F#] sweetie.
And now we have Hadrian, [E] our juarizo.
That's amazing.
That's [C] incredible.
That's so cool.
Now, Chris, it's amazing because there have been some great things that have
happened last year in tribute to Nirvana.
I know you guys were honored at the Grammys this past year.
And then there was that show that happened, I think, shortly before the
pandemic at the Hollywood Palladium where a lot of people were doing your songs.
Is it really, do you enjoy getting up there and seeing other people interpret
those songs and playing them [Em] with them?
Yeah.
It's always amazing.
And I'm [F] really grateful that people are in Nirvana [G] and they feel such a
connection to the band.
[F] And Nirvana is on the radio all the time.
[Am] And it's great to see [G] Dave and Pat and to just, you know, to play the [C] music again.
There was a time when I thought I'd never play Nirvana [Am] again.
And so it's good to play, you [Em] know, to play those songs again.
Yeah.
And you being, you know, the guy who grew [F] up with Kurt up there in
Aberdeen, you know what I mean?
Kids, [C] you know, doing graffiti and just, you know, listening to rock
records and everything.
Yeah, and discover new [F] music and listen to like rock and roll.
[C] And it was pretty cool.
I mean, yeah.
Like I said, at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, you famously brought out,
you know, Kim Gordon and Joan Jett and all those [Am] other great female [G] artists.
And then, of course, when you [F] played again another time, you brought out a
young artist from [G] Liverpool named Paul [C] McCartney to jam with [Am] you as well.
What was it like, I have to just ask, as all of [Em] us just lifelong Beatles
fans, what's it like to sort of, you know, hang out [F] and jam with Paul McCartney?
Yeah, Paul [C] is, he's just so amazing.
And he's still, you know, he's making great [Am] music.
And then when [C] I, like, what do we call this band?
And so somebody [F] came up, [G] some fan with the word Sirvanna.
And I was just like, well, [Dm] I want to call it Chris Novoselic with Paul
[Am] McCartney and friends.
[Em] And [Am] Paul, [G] they weren't into that.
So, I'm like, all right, we'll just go with Sirvanna.
Yeah, we definitely like that.
That's [C] incredible.
You were such a pleasure to talk to.
Thank you so much for [Am] doing this and for being here on the Power Hour.
It was [Em] amazing for us to virtually meet him.
A lifelong dream come true.
Hopefully [C] sometime it will be in person.
[Am] Hey, thanks for having me on the show.
So, [C] on my way out the door, I'm going to tell you that [G] here's a sneak
peek of our new third [C] secret video, [E] Ditch.
It's just a [D] time, it's a state, [C] it's a place.
[G] I'm hiding [D] it all.
[E] It's [D] just a door that rules [C] this place.
It's [G] a prison.
[D]
[E] It's just a time, it's a state, [C] it's a place.
Well, that's a bit of Ditch [G] from the forthcoming album,

Second Third Secret.

[Em] And _ [Am] Paul, [G] they weren't into that.
[E] _ _ It's [D] just a door that rules [C] this place.
It's [G] a prison.
[D] _
_ [E] _ _ It's just a time, it's a state, [C] it's a place.
Well, that's a bit of Ditch [G] from the forthcoming album,
[D]
Second Third Secret.
_ [E] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ Make sure you leave a comment below.
[Em] I don't know, just let us know what your favorite AXS TV show is or who
your favorite bands are and what artists you're into or [B] just say hi, man.
I [A] like to be told hi.
We love hearing from you.
hey, you guys should start a band.
And by golly, we did.
_ [E] _ _ _ _ _
[D] Our next guest is a bass player, [D] songwriter, rock and roll hall of famer,
and a founding member of Seattle legends Nirvana.
His new band is called Third Secret.
We're going to play a little snippet of their [F] new video.
If [A#] _ _
[C#] I'd have seen your [D#] face before, I know I [F#] would [A#] remember.
Him _ [F#] _ and Bubba and I were jamming with [B] Alfredo Hernandez, who was in AIS. _
_ [F#] And we were just jamming.
_ Which is really cool.
And you've let me hear some stuff in advance, which is incredible, like Ditch [E] and 10 new songs.
But can you talk to me?
I know [G#m] there was also Roots and you guys jamming together.
You ended [E] up, was one of the first performances you [A] guys did involved with the Alice in Chains livestream [B] that was like a_
That's right.
[A] That's it.
And so [C#m] then _ _
[B] we [A] played at this Mo-Pop tribute [Bm] to Alice in Chains.
_ [Em] _ One of the interesting things about this new record you're going to release [Am] is that Matt Cameron [Em] actually sings on the record, which is great.
[Am] _ So he's just [E] he's he contributes songs to Pearl Jam because he's a drummer Pearl Jam, right?
And now we have Hadrian, [E] _ our juarizo.
