_ Hey, [Bb] what's up you guys?
Marty Schwartz here and I am thrilled to be back making tons of guitar lesson videos and
I'm going to bring you one of those iconic guitar lessons right now.
So we'll zoom in, I'll show you the chords, all the little tricks and everything.
And also real quick, I really appreciate you subscribing to this YouTube channel of mine.
This is where I'm going to be and I got a lot of cool stuff planned so I really appreciate that.
But anyway, let's zoom in and break this one down right now.
Here we go.
Alright, so we're going to be doing power chords.
And power chords are typically, _ you know, like a two finger, sometimes a three finger
chord.
It's a two note chord.
And the first power chord we're going to play is an F power chord which has the root on
the first fret of the E string.
[F] _ _ And ring finger on, some people use their pinky, but ring finger on the third fret of
the A string. _ _ _ _ _ _
[A] So that's our first chord.
And the trick with that chord, my voice went high.
_ The trick is with the index finger, I'm letting it lightly touch _ [Em] the other string so [C] they're muted.
So _ if I did a power chord with just the tips and didn't mute the strings, _ it would sound like that.
But if I let my index finger, _ _ [F] _ _ [G] _
_ [C] _ _ _ _ and then I kind of aim for the top, _ [C] _ _ _ _ [G] _
then _ you get that muted sound.
So we'll work on that rhythm in just a few seconds.
Let's go through the other chords [C]
of the main part of this song.
So F. _ _
Then we just scoot this chord down a string.
So now what we have is [E] index on the first of the A, ring on the third of the D, still muting.
But now there's a new thing we're muting, and that's with the tip of my index finger,
it's muting [Bb] that low E.
Just by _ hitting that note, _ and I'm letting it, _ [C] the tip of it kind of [F] rub up against that
low E to mute it.
_ _ [Bb] And those are muted.
So we have [Fm] F, _ then this one which is B flat power chord.
_ _ _ Then we're going to do the exact same thing, and we go up to where the [Ab] root is on the fourth
fret of the E string.
So now we'll call that A flat, and then ring finger on the sixth of the A, _ and then move [Db] that over. _
[F] _ _ _ _ _ [Ab] _ _ [Dbm] _
_ _ And it starts clean, and then you kick on some kind of [C] distortion pedal, overdrive pedal,
grunge pedal, fuzz pedal, just some kind of beefy distortion pedal to get that more rock sound.
_ So, here's it again, F [F] to B flat, _ _ [Ab] A flat to D [Db] flat.
_ _ _ _ [D] _
_ _ [Ab] _ _ [Dbm] _ _ [C] _ _
_ _ [Ab] _ _ _ [Dbm] _ _ [C] _
_ [F] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [D] _ _ _ _ _
So the rhythm that's going on is down, up, down, chicky, [N] chicky, which _ _ is down, up, down,
up.
So down, [F] up, down, chicky, chicky.
[E] _ _ [D] _ _
_ And so what's going on is I'm doing the down, up, down, then I'm relaxing my chording hand, _ _ _ _ _
but touching the string so it's muted.
_ _ _ [F] _
_ [D] _ _ _ [F] _ _ [D] _ _
_ And so I went down, up, down, up, then I scoot that chord [F] over. _ _ _ _ _ _
[Em] _ _ [Bb] _ _ _ [C] _ _ _
_ [G] _ _ _ _ _ _ [F] _
_ [Ab] _ _ _ _ [Db] _ _ [C] _
_ [Em] _ _ _ [Ab] _ _ _ _
[Db] _ _ [Em] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [E] _ _ So you can hear that muting sound.
So now let me do that again and break it down even slower.
_ [C] And the art of muting the strings you don't want, it takes some time, but you just want
to keep jamming the song, and that will get better.
That's the kind of thing you work through by repetition.
Here we go.
_ Down, up, down, chicky, [F] chicky.
Down, down, down, up, [Ab] down, up, down, [C]
chicky, [Db] chicky.
Down, down, [C] down, up, down, up, down, chicky, [F] chicky.
Down, down, down, up, down, up, [E] down, chicky, chicky.
Down, [D] down, down, up, down, up, down, chicky, chicky, [Ab] down.
_ [Dbm] _ _ _ [C] _ _ [Ab] _
_ _ [Dbm] _ _ [F] _ _ [Gb] _
[Ab] Down, [Db] up, _ [Bb] down, up, down, up, down, chicky, chicky.
_ [Ab] _
_ [Db] _ _ I just want to show off my bass pedal.
I have this little pedal that adds a bass sound, and because that's what happens in
the song, it breaks down to just bass and drums and vocals, and then this real kind
of moody little guitar part.
I just have a chorus effect.
_ I think he's using like a vibrato kind of effect.
Anyway, I'm just using just a random chorus effect just to [C] add a little different flavor.
What you're doing is you're covering the first fret of the B and the high E, and you're
hitting the B, then the high E.
First fret.
[Fm] _ _ _ _
So if you have the_
_ [E] _ _ [Ab] _ _
[Em] _ _ [C] One, two, [F] and_
[C] _
_ _ One, two, and three, four, one, two, three, four, one. _ _ _ _
_ _ _ Then, _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
just as it _ builds_
Da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, [F] da.
_ [Ab] _ _
[Dbm] _ _ [C] _ _ _ _ _ [Ab] _
_ [Dbm] _ _ _ _ _ [Ab] _ _
[Dbm] _ _ [C] _ _ _ _ [Ab] _ _
_ [F] _ [G] And so the bass line, even though it's not played on guitar, it would be just the root
notes of the power chords.
[F] One, one, [Bb] one, one, one, one, [Abm] one, one, four, four, [Ab] four, four, four, four, four, one, one,
[F] two, da.
_ Dum, dum, dum, dum, dum, dum, dum, dum, dum, dum, dum. _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ Then you've got [C] a_ _ _
_ _ You know it does that a bunch.
Into the rock, da, da, da, chicky, chicky.
And so, one more time on that first rhythm, really slow.
_ _ [Em] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [Ab] _ _ _ [Ab] _
_ [Db] _ _ _ [E] _ [C] _ _ _
[Em] _ _ [Ab] _ _ _ [Dbm] _ _ [C] _
_ _ [Ab] _ _ [Dbm] _ _ [C] _ _
[F] _ _ [Ab] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ Alright, that's all she wrote.
