Jam Along & Learn...
Hey I'm [Ab] Jeff.
I'm Stu.
From No [Db] Devotion.
You're watching Enemy.com.
I think people who knew the singles, [F] when they hear Permanence, the full record come out,
it's [Eb] got a lot of darker side than the singles.
You know, the singles are kind of like [Db] the brightest, most hopeful side of [F] the band.
Which may worry some people because they already have a little sad current.
Yeah, they're already pretty dark.
They're already pretty dark for [Ab] singles, but that's like the tip of the [Db] iceberg.
You know, from there you plunge much deeper [Bbm] into it.
Yeah, it gets pretty, [Bb] pretty dark.
Yeah, we set it up so it's [Gm] like, the second song is Permanent Sunlight, which is our newest single.
[C] And that's like the brightest it gets.
[Bb] So right away you get a little jolt.
But still, the first song that nobody's heard is like, it's a trip.
People won't believe it when they hear [D] it from us.
Yeah.
I think there are actually a lot of surprising influences on this record.
Like, people hear us and they think, you know, oh it's post-funk.
It's The Cure and Joy Division and Suzie Su and New Order and stuff like that.
But, [Abm] you know, we were listening to a lot of like, weird dance music when we were [Db] making this record.
We always say that this is dance music you can't dance to.
So it's like, listen to [Ab] a lot of Avian Christ, a lot of the Gil Scott Heron records [A] and stuff like [Gbm] that.
Just, you know, a lot of textural, [Ab] dark, heavy.
You know, for us we both played in bands that were big guitar bands.
[Dbm] So, we want something heavier now.
We wanted [Abm] to get, yeah, like soundscape-y and like, you know, make real big noise.
Noise [Ab]-vistas.
Yeah, noise-vistas.
Yeah, [Bm] it's funny because [Abm] we heard an interview with Health the other day and we were like,
it's like [E] everything we've been saying, our mantra's for the last two years.
Pop is heavier, [Abm] noise is heavier than guitars.
You know, it's like everything they said is a little even harder.
I have two kids and they listen to like, [Db] so much pop and some of that shit is so fucking heavy.
You know what I mean?
Like [Ab] the bass is like, and then you hear like Converge and you're like, ah, you know.
It's fast.
Yeah, [Db] it's fast, yeah.
But it's not as heavy as fucking Kelly Clarkson.
Yeah, Kelly [Ab] Clarkson is killing you guys.
Because it's like, you know, so we wanted [B] to steal a little bit of that.
Yeah, steal a little pop.
But I do love Converge.
[Abm] Yeah.
Just to throw that out there.
[E] Swear guys, it's okay.
Yeah, yeah, we're cool.
[Ab] I still love them.
Yeah, I actually think this time [Bbm] last year, we [Abm] had to tell the story every time we did anything.
Every time we stepped on stage, I had to say, you know, [F] this, but thank you for [Bb] being here and actually letting us get past it.
And now, you know, I [Eb] said something along those lines yesterday and somebody said like, why would you say that?
Like, we don't care anymore.
That's the past.
And I was like, [Bb]
really?
It's only been a year.
We're allowed, like we haven't even put out a record yet.
We're allowed to [Db] move on and everybody's like, please move on.
Like, nobody [Ab] wants to think about that anymore.
You know, it's like, [Bb] good, we don't want to think about it anymore.
It's a terrible time in our lives, you know.
So, yeah, it's [Ab] really nice we get to move on.
I'm just glad to play here again.
You know what I [Bb] mean?
I'm just really glad to play Redden again.
I thought we were done.
I thought, you know, like, [Eb] I didn't really.
We were told [Gb] we couldn't ever do it again.
We wouldn't be on [Bb] radio, we wouldn't be in print, we wouldn't be at [Bbm] festivals.
We were told all that when we started.
Yeah, it was like, you [Gb] guys are done.
So, [Bb] I tried not to do that, but I started writing music and then met Jeff and, you know, here we are.
You know, it just happened [Gb] gradually.
And, you know, like you said earlier on, it's like, when Stay came out, [Dm] I felt like it was such a small part of the band.
The people just, even though that's like a poppiest [B] song, it's still kind of dark, but I think people were just expecting us to be even [Bb] more poppy.
And we're [Bb] a lot different.
It's a lot easier with these singles all coming out [C] to tell the story of what we were actually trying [Bb] to say.
Anyway, I'm going off topic a little bit.
No, no, I think, you know, getting [Eb] back to kind of what you were [Bb] saying, like, do we want to be a huge online festival?
No, I never had that with Thursday.
Like, in America, we were a big band.
We were always an underground big band, you know.
So, with this band, given everything that I know about these guys, it's like, yeah, I'm going to do everything that I can to make this band as big as possible.
You know, because I want to bring them back where they're from, where they were so comfortable, you know, on [N] top of these festival bills.
If I can, of course I will.
You know, like, I don't think I'd ever do anything [Eb] against my nature to get there, [Gb] but [D] if we can, I'm not going to say no.
