Hey, this is Will [D] Putney, producer at Graphic Nature Audio, and today we're recording Normagene.
[A]
[C]
[D]
Normagene is very [A] invested in the sounds on this [C] record, too.
We're doing a lot of stuff [D] together.
That collaborative [A] process has been really awesome.
He was putting in ideas like [C]
a sixth member.
[N] He understands the vibe and he respects the message and [G] wants it to get across in a way that's powerful.
With this [Dm] being my first record with the [Db] band, it's [G] still pretty surreal.
I've been with them for about a year and a [C] half, and it still feels crazy to be here.
I've been [B] listening to Will's records for years as well, so this whole experience [C] has been such a huge blessing for me.
[G] I tried to approach my writing and [Bb] the songs that I've contributed to the record from a [C] place of
both where I feel like the band's trying to go after being a part of it, and [A] then also as a fan standpoint.
As [Bb] somebody that's listened to the band since I was [F] a young teenager, I knew what I would want to hear.
We came into the [A] studio and it's just [N] run and exercise.
Play the song, play the song again.
Demo it, demo it again.
So we knew the [A] songs so much better before we even started tracking them.
When you're producing a record, sound design is really, really crucial to kind of giving the listener
what the vibe of the song should be about or carry the emotions.
So working with Norm and Gina on this record, we've already found a lot of really cool tricks and techniques to get the vibe right.
Some of the unorthodox things are, for me, I try to probably hit a little too hard when I play.
I want it to have a very [C] live feel to it, and I want to hear the strings [D]
come out of tune [A] on parts.
I want it to feel like there's an aggressiveness behind playing it, and [G] it's not a computer doing it.
[Db] On one [A] song, we took a big knife and actually did the pick slide with the knife, so we had a lot of coverage on all the [C] strings.
And it sounds pretty gnarly.
One thing that we really do like to do that [G] we've experimented [A] with on the last few [C] records
is trying to match the [Db] emotion [A] of the song to what we're trying to say.
And Will's been [F] so awesome about making sure that that's coming [A] through too
and has understood that the emotion and the lyrics [Fm] match.
Every day, somebody in the [D] band or myself has this sort [Db] of epiphany, and there's a [C] new idea.
And it's been a really refreshing process to [A] make a record like that.
The themes that I started out with on this record [Bb]
were based [D] on connections that [F] we've had with fans over the [Bb] last [F] several years.
[Db] We play a show, we hang out, [N] we meet people, and you get to know people and you get really close with them.
The one [A] thing I'm most excited for fans to hear about is just the continued growth that this record has.
It has such a huge atmosphere to it, and it cannot be pigeonholed in any [N] genre, sub-genre, or anything.
It's got the quietest stuff the band's ever done, in my opinion, and the heaviest stuff that the band's ever done, in my opinion.
And everything in between, that's there.
We [A] like the ambient ideas.
[A] But if it's going to be heavy, just make it very, very heavy.
I want to keep going.
I feel like there's something important here, at least to somebody, and I'm going to keep doing it.
I just want to play music with my friends.
That's really what Norma Jean has always been.
