I'm so today to be joined by Jenny and Paul from Devil Skin
They're about to release their album and go on a [C#m] massive tour everywhere.
Hello guys and welcome to the show
I'm Joyce.
Thanks.
Good to have you guys on here.
Great [C#m] to be here
Well, you guys let's kind of take it back to the beginning because I haven't actually spoken to you on the inside myself before
[G] So for those of you [C#] who might be unaware and aren't too sure about the history of Devil Skin
[G] You guys have been a band separately and in the music [C#] scene for quite a long time
So why don't you kind of introduce yourself and tell everybody about where you kind of [F#] how Devil Skin came to be?
Okay, I'm [C#] Paul.
My favorite color is black
[F#] I'm a Gemini and
[C#] No, basically, I've been in bands since I was a kid [C#m] and and always love playing writing my music and stuff
I played in a band called Nightshade for a couple years
Blackjack Fury
and
basically
Jenny was in a band called Slipping Tongue and I they sent me a demo [C#] when she was 16 and it just [G#] blew my socks off
And I became their biggest fan and [C#] sort of followed her ever since and when Jenny was between bands
Bam, I'm in there.
And so how long have Devil Skin been together as a [A] band now?
What'd you say?
We got together in 2009.
So it was [D#] late 2009
yeah, but I mean [C#m] we started with a drummer called Rob and
[C#]
He [C#] sort of left
2010
[Em] [F#]
[D#] And we got Nick [C#m] into the band and that is Paul's son.
So Nick joined us.
Yeah [F#] Nick joined us when he was 15
All right, and then so from way to go you're about to release.
This is your debut album, right?
Yes
[B] After [C#m]
5 years or so?
You know, we may not be [G#m] fast but we're rough
No, I mean we had we had the opportunity to do it earlier, [C#m] but we want to do it right
We want to record [F#] this album properly and treat the songs with the respect that we thought [C#] they deserved and [B] we didn't want to do
A rush job and [F#m] a botched job, you know, so it's taken a [F#] while and we're just stoked that people have hung in there and
[C#m] we still remember who we are after all this time and
We're just so happy with the album.
We think people are gonna love it
So if you look at you guys starting up from 2009 and now you've released you're about to when's the album come out?
[C#m] 11th of July
Okay, so we've got a few [C#] days to go
Do you find that your style has changed [F#] or you're kind of trying to hone a particular sound in those five years?
[C#] How's it gone?
I think you know, I don't think [C#m] we've got a particular sound.
Yeah with the album, you know
[C#m] You've got songs like Fade.
It's a ballad, you know
It's a nice ballad and then you've got songs like Violation, which is completely opposite
It's [C#] just me screaming my lungs out.
Totally.
Yeah, [G#] you know, [E] but we we don't sort of go.
All [F#] right, we're gonna ride out
Here we melt song, you know, it's just like we'll see what comes out.
Yeah
You know, [C#m] that's just beauty of devil skin
I think it's all pretty organic when we get together
We we sort of have to stop [F#m] ourselves from writing songs or that one's [D#] not finished yet.
I don't got this cool idea
[C#m] Shut up, save it.
I've forgotten [F#] it.
Okay
Inspirations flowing.
Yeah, [C#m] totally and we're all will totally inspire each other [C#] and writing songs is really easy for us
And like Jen says we don't sit out to write a particular style what comes out is what comes out and I mean
Life your [E] life's full of light and dark and shade and stuff
And so we like [C#] to have you know, a lot of colors on our album as well
I think there's some some, you know, all sorts of different shades on there
Um, and [C#m] so we've got we've got a [A] tour like how many days 19 19
You don't get many tours these days.
I have so many [B] dates
Yep, 19 shows in like a month and a half.
You folks have been getting ripped off by these other bands
Yeah, I reckon.
Hey, tell me about [C#] where abouts you guys are hitting some of their like smaller places as [Gm] well
Methvin?
Yep.
Methhaven
I think we're only allowed to call it Methvin
And
Reparoa.
[C#] Yeah
Timaroa
Going down to Invercargill.
Sure.
Queenstown
[N] Yeah, Wanaka.

For the punders?
[C#m]

It's an inspirational, [G#] evocative Number, basically
Saying people wake up, you know
Don't let anyone pull a wool over your eyes
And wake up and see what's [A] going on
Sort of thing.
Start A [G] Revolution
Is that a kind of a [C#m] theme for the album, being that the title is
We Rise and you know, revolutions
[G#] And the like?
In a way, you know, just the feeling behind everything
Because [Em] we're all feeling like things are bubbling
And we're just about to bloom and explode You know?
It's all part of it.
