right everyone out there in banjo land [F] Mike heading here today
I've got the old fiddle tune old Joe Clark
I've seen a lot of melodic style banjo arrangements of this
But I decided to focus on more of a scrug [N] style arrangement this time so we're gonna talk about
adapting a fiddle melody
To kind of the scrug style right hand roll so you can keep some of the drive and the bluegrass
Banjo style that we all know and love got my capo up on on capo 2 so I'm up in the key of a
Even though we're playing out of the key of G
And I'm gonna break down the whole tune note for note for you
And then show you a bunch [A] of backup stuff you can do all right.
Here's old Joe Clark
All right, so here's the first two measures of old Joe Clark.
Let me play it, and then I'll break it down
[D#] [F#m]
[A] [D] [A]
[D#] [F#m] [Em] [A] [N] All right, so here's the pickup.
Let's break down the song here's measure one
We're we're start with a crude kind of pickup on beat two.
We're just actually gonna do just a pinch
I kind of like doing these for the bluesy song so we're actually just gonna count one
And then we're gonna pinch on beat two I'm [A] pinching the fifth string and the first string
There's kind of like a little pop so one
Three so that so what I recommend is count on beat one and three or count them all if you need to but one
Two three and then we're gonna do a [G#m] two three hammer out on the second string on beat four
[E] So I'm bringing my thumb down to the second string of my right my thumb on my right hand down to the second string
[D#] And I'm doing a hammer on
[E] With my first and second fingers on on two and [D#] three on the second string second and third fret
[A] So that whole measure sounds like this one two [D#] three [E] four one more time [Am] one two three
[A] Okay now here's measure two we're gonna roll forward let me play measure two and then I'll play them together
So you're starting on the fifth string?
[F#m] [A] [F#m] One more time here's measure two
[Em] So [F#m] [G] you're basically gonna start with your second finger down on the third fret you're gonna keep it down from that hammer on from measure
One and I'm gonna start rolling forward [Am] fifth string
[E] second string
Then I'm gonna put my first finger of my left hand up to the [F#] second fret of the first string
And [A] then I'm gonna play one more fifth string
So we're going
[F#m] so thumb index middle thumb
And [G] then I'm gonna reach my third finger my ring finger my left hand and grab the third fret of the first string
And I'm playing that with the middle finger my right hand and then I'm gonna take that finger off
I'm gonna pinch the second fret of the first string [F#m] and the open fifth string
So that whole measure sounds like this
one and two [C] and [F#m] three
Four those last two are quarter notes, so give those a full beat one and two [G] and [F#m] three
Four we're gonna use this lick a lot, so let's practice this one a few times
one and two [G] and [D] three four
one more time
[C]
[F#m] [Am] One
Keep keep your left hand down except for your third finger
You know don't lift everything off when you start when you start changing notes keep everything down that'll help you connect the tones
Okay, here's measure one and two together, so we're counting remember one and then we pinch on beat two one two three
[D#] [A] four and [D] one and two and three four
[A] one more time one two three
four and one [F#] and [Cm] two and [F#m] three four [E] and the melody part there is just
[D#] So [F#m] [E] we're doing open first string
second [Bm] fret [G] third fret
[F#] back to the second fret
[C#m] Open so that's the first met melody of the first part, so we're just rolling [D#] into that
[Am] [D] So [C] [F#]
instead of just playing the open [E] first string like we could
[F#m] We're [E] rolling into that note
On the third fret of the second string it's the same as your open first string
So we're just kind of making it a little banjo [A] sounding
[F#m] [A] If [D]
[E] you're not hearing
[F#m] That's [A] [F#m] a good.
[E] This is a good song to kind of practice bringing out a melody on the first string
[F#m] You're [Gm]
[D] gonna kind of have to access
Accent [Am] those notes with your middle finger of your right hand okay, so one more time.
Here's one and two together one two three
[D#]
[E] [F#m] [Em] Four
Okay, [F#] here's [Am] measure three we're gonna do
[E] open first string and
Then we're gonna bring our first finger of our left hand down to the first fret of the second string and we're gonna pinch the
second and first string together and
Then we're gonna take our left hand off [C#m] and pinch open
second string and open first string
So [E] that sounds like this
[C#m]
So [E] just quarter notes one
[C#m]
[D#] So those are our first three beats, and then we're gonna go into it back into our two three hammer on the second string
[E] And that's actually gonna pick us back up into the to the opening melody phrase again, so so here's the melody of the measure three
[D] [C#m] So it's just open [E] first string
First fret on [D] the second string and then [C#] open second string, and we're just [E] filling it up with some pinches
[C#m] You can take those [E] pinches out too.
If you don't like those you can just go
[A] Okay, so after we do those three pinches
Then we bring our thumb of our right hand back down to the [D#] the second string and we do that two to three hammer on again
[E] And then we're going back into our [G] opening melody phrase.
This is the same as [F#m] measure two
So [Em] [F#m] same right hand same left hand
[A] [F#m]
