In this lesson we're going to break down a [Bm] driving blues groove in [Bb] open G that [E] is gritty and full [Bb] of some sweet slide moves.
[C] Check the time stamps if you're looking [Bb] for the entire playthrough [C] of this piece, but we're going to get started right now with [Gm] the main riff and build this thing brick by brick.
Let's get to it.
_ _ _ _ _ [Bb] _ _
[N] This main riff really sets up a lot of what we're going to do in this progression.
Something that you should definitely keep in mind is this technique that we [Gb] have going here picking wise.
I'm using the thumb to play the bass on the [G] 5th string.
Once I play it, I'm coming back to the top of the string to kind of mute it out.
I'm not doing this.
_ I'm coming back and making it kind of pop just by stopping the note.
Then I'm locking these two fingers together.
That's my index and middle and plucking strings 4 and 3.
I'm plucking those together kind of as a unit a lot [Gm] here.
You get kind of this bounce, this seesaw effect. _
_ That's actually the first two _ parts here.
We go bass, [D] strings 4 and 3.
Then we're going to slide down from the 3rd fret, plucking the 3rd and [Bb] 4th string together.
[A] Slide down from 3 to 2 [G] and then pluck again. _ _ _ _
_ _ [D] _ Now hit the bass and we're going to hammer on.
Open up to [F] the 3rd fret.
That's kind of tricky because we're hammering [Db] on with the slide.
Then [Bb] _ we're going to break these two fingers here [G] apart [Bb] and just roll through [Gm] the strings here.
[Bb] Thumb, index, middle and then [C] slide up _ to the 5th fret and do it again.
[Gm] What we've got for the first part of this riff is_ _ _ _
_ One more time.
_ [Bb] _ _ [C] _
_ [Gm] We answer that the second time around with a lot of the same technique in mind.
_ _ [C] _ We just sort of change the back half of this.
_ _ [B] We're much [Gm] more on the beat here.
_ We've got that same sort of vibe happening where it's thumb and then these two as a unit.
[Bbm] _ Then we come [C] up to the 5th fret and pluck all three together.
[G] We want to make a big statement about that to end the riff.
[Gm] _ _ _ _ [Gm] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [C] _ _ _ _
_ [Bb] _ _ [Gm] _ _ _ [Bb] _ [C] _
_ That's the main riff.
Then what we're going to do is just repeat that.
We'll play that twice before moving on to the 4th chord.
Just here at the 5th fret.
We're going to [F] make a big statement and slide into the chord.
I'm going to use all three fingers.
My thumb, index and my middle on my picking hand. _ _
Pluck those all together and slide in.
Then there's a really cool lick coming. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [Gm] _ _ [Db] _ A few things going [G] on here.
We're sliding [C] to the chord.
[G] That's strings 5, 4 and 3.
[A] Double slide.
[B] We're coming in twice.
[C] A good way to make a statement.
Then we launch [Abm] into this lick which mixes [Ab] the slide and a fretted note.
[D] _ _
_ _ _ Here it is.
[G] _ _
That's [Em] going from the [G] 4th string to the 5th string.
[Ab] Right at the 5th fret under the slide.
[C] _ _ [F] _ Drop back down to the 3rd fret on the 4th string.
[C] _ _ _ [G] _
Then come back up to the 5th.
Obviously [Fm] when you're doing that, you're coming down [Bm] with the fretted note.
_ _ [Bb] _ _ [Ab] We finish that off with this cool slurred motion.
Slide back down [F] to 3rd fret and [D] then pull off.
Just flick the wrist off.
_ _ [E] That's what we're looking for.
_ _ _ [G] _ _ _
[Gb] Come back.
_ _ _ [Gm] _ Instead of going back down. _ _ _ _
We're going to go up.
[C] _ _ _ _ [Bb] _ _
That's an important note.
We're really over a C chord. _
That is the b7 of C.
There's a C and there's the [C] b7.
We've got _ _ [Ab] that note that really puts a lot of blues at play.
We're going to play it [D] again.
_ _ [C] _ _
[Gm] _ _ [Ab] We pretty much have everything we need to build the entire 12 bar progression.
Except for when we hit the 5 chord.
At bar 9 we're going to go up.
[D] Do something very similar to what we just did over bars 5 and 6.
Let's have a look at bars 9 and 10.
_ _ _ [Gm] _ _ _ [D] _ _
We have this call back to what we've already done over the 4 chord.
When we hit that 5 chord [A] up here at the 7th fret.
When I say 5 chord I just mean 5 chords above the key center.
_ You don't have to know that.
Just slide into the 7th fret here.
We're going to do that same move that we did. _
_ _ _ [Ab] Then we're going to back down and do basically the same thing.
[C] _ _ [E] But just down a full step.
Two frets.
[D] _ _ _ [A] _ [D] _
_ [G] _ _ _ _ _ [E] Now we basically have all of the blocks to put this thing together into a 12 bar blues progression.
There's one little statement that we're going to make at the end.
Just to [A] finish off with some power moves here.
[C] I think you'll be able to figure that out just by watching along.
Of course you can always follow along with the tab if you're a premium member.
But I think you'll get this.
_ [D] _ _ [C] _ _
_ [G] _ Then of course coming back to home base to round this out.
Let's have a listen to this.
Let's throw some drums in the mix here.
Have some fun with this.
Let's go around this thing for 12 bars.
