Till [Am] they began to speak of murder, and in [G] the end I had to leave, [G] when they asked me which disciples could [Am] be bought. _ _
_ _ [F] Early in the morning, [C] I was wakened by [Am] the shouts, when [F] a man ran through the [D] courtyard [G] down below.
_ In a panic, [Am] shouting, Jesus has been taken, [F] the council's been convened, and they're [Dm] going to try [G] to kill him [A] now, I know.
_ [Am] _ _ [F] No one who'd [G] been seen with him [C] even knew [G] about that [Am] trial, [F] and when I arrived there [D] was just an empty [G] hall. _
_ _ _ [F] When I finally [G] found them, I [C] could not believe [Am] my [F] eyes, he was [G] being scourged [A] before them all. _ _

_ _ [Am] _ _ _ _ The _ _ crowd screamed out for murder, but he [F] never made a sound, and at last [Dm] they led him back beside the [G] door. _ _ _
[Am] But when Pilate brought him out again, [F] and said, Behold, the man, _ [Dm] he couldn't hold the [G] tears back [Am] anymore. _ _ _ _
[F] But he bore no [G] resemblance [C] to the one I [Am] used to know, [F] from his face you [D] couldn't tell he [G] was a man.

stand.

The crowd just screamed and roared, [D] until at last [G] he let them have their way. _ _ _
[Am] And they took him off to Golgotha, and I [F] followed far behind, [Dm] afraid to [G] look, and afraid to [A] turn away.
_ _ _ But slowly I drew closer, [F] as the light of God appeared, [Dm] and a sudden silence spread across the [G] land. _
_ _ [A] And at noon it grew like [Am] midnight, [F] as if no one were allowed [Dm] to witness [G] what was happening to [A] this man. _
[F] My God, my [G] God, what have I done to turn you [Am] back on me?
[F] His scream of [D] anguish echoed [G] down the hill.
_ _ And [F] it seemed I [G] heard the misery, [C] and the [G] sickness, and [Am] the sin [F] of every man who [G] ever lived or ever [A] will.
_ _ [F] And in agony [G] he raised [C] himself, and he pulled against [Am] the nails, just [F] enough [F#m] to fill his lungs for one [G] more cry.
_ At [A] this first, Father unto you [F] I now commit my life.
