Here's a bit of simple counting to get you going on this Philip Glass's beautiful piece,
Opening from Glassworks.
It's a little bit tricky because you're playing a different rhythm with your right hand and your left hand,
but once you get into a simple little rhythm of counting, it should all come together for you.
Anyway, here we go.
Give this a whirl.
With your right hand, count in this way.
[Fm] 1, 2 and 3, 1, 2 and 3, 1, 2 and 3, 1, 2 and 3, 1, 2 and 3, 1, 2 and 3, 1, 2 and 3.
[F] Now the [N] and is where the little sort of syncopated beat comes in from your left hand,
which is of [E] course playing [Fm] this.
[C] [N] So if you put the two together with the count,
that's probably the easiest way for me to demonstrate to you how all the little beats fit together.
So here we go with the 2 hands with that same count, 1, 2 and 3.
[G]
[Fm] 1, 2 and, 3, 1, 2 and 3, 1, 2 and 3, 1, 2 and 3, 1, 2 and 3, 1, 2 and 3, 1, 2 and 3, 1, 2 and 3, 1, 2 and 3.
[N] And so on.
So you can see that with the left hand every second note that you're playing, so in the
first bar they're all C's and in the second bar, those notes, every second note, those
C's are coming on the and, the 1, 2 and 3.
So I hope this little simple technique gets
you going if you've been having any problems coordinating yourself with this piece.
It
certainly took me a little bit to get my right brain and left brain going on this one.
Anyway,
have fun with it folks!
