[N] Hey, Dave from Dave's Guitar Shop here.
People have been asking us to do a little comparison on a real 59 burst versus like the reissues.
And yeah, we can have fun doing that.
I love playing guitars.
And I tell you, I gotta tell you right now, we're all a bunch of spoiled little brats.
When I was growing up in the 70s, you know, our choices for guitars were so, so bad.
I mean, the 70s Fenders and Gibsons were heavy.
They didn't think anything of their history.
They thought about making bodies out of sandwich mahogany so they could save some money.
The short neck tenons, just a horrible time.
And you know, we all dreamed of being able to play a burst or have a burst or whatever.
And you just couldn't get your hands on one.
The prices back then, I remember being anywhere from $1,500 to $2,500, which seemed like a
dollar money in the world to me.
So we just didn't have a choice for that.
And then starting in the 80s, Gibson started paying attention a little more to what people wanted.
You know, people were demanding bursts.
And they started out doing the reissues in 1980 with the Heritage stuff.
And they were cool and they had to look.
And Gibson has kept improving them time over time.
And I'll have to admit, I haven't sat down with my 59 and did a shootout against a reissue
in many, many years.
And just doing it today, prepping for this, I was like pleasantly surprised.
I mean, they do such a nice job on this.
And like I said, we're all a spoiled bunch of babies.
Whatever Gibson gives us or any of these companies give us, we always want a little better or
a little more.
And they keep trying to supply all our needs or whatever.
But I have to say, since 92, since they started doing the long neck tenon on the reissue stuff,
you know, could we get much better of a playing guitar or sounding guitar than that?
I don't know.
You know, I'm really, I'm really, it's really a great time to be a guitar player.
There's so many choices and great choices, but enough of me babbling.
We'll play some guitars here.
This is, I guess, a 2014 59 reissue that we, I guess, picked out because it looked, the
burst looked kind of like the real one did.
And we'll just see how they sound side by side here.
Just playing on the neck pickup right now through an 80s JCM 800 Marshall that I kind of dig.
And what's better than a Les Paul through a [B] Marshall, right?
[D]
[Am] [Em]
[F] [D] [B]
Go to the treble pickup.
[A]
[Am]
[D] [Bb] [Fm]
[A] [Em]
[B]
[Dm]
[Am]
[N] I just like that position of both pickups on wide open.
You get kind of that real full, like Allman Brothers kind of sound.
And this guitar, I'd have to say, is doing real, real [A] good.
[Em]
[A] [Em]
Real ringy, real sustainy.
Let's see how this 59 Les Paul.
[Bb] Okay, this is my real 59 burst.
All original.
We've never done anything to it.
The top is pretty flamey, but I've said this before, if Gibson sent me a 59 right now that
looked like this, I'd send it [E] back to them, tell them it wasn't good enough.
But that's the way that goes.
Okay, neck position pickup here.
[A]
[D] [Am]
[B] [C]
[B]
Somehow that reminds me of spinal tap.
You can play a note and go get a sandwich and come back, it'll still be ringing.
But yeah, I'm not complaining.
This is a great guitar.
[D] [A]
[D] [G] [A]
[E]
[Bb] [A]
[Am]
[Bb] [Bb]
[E]
[C] Yeah, what can I say?
If I was doing a blindfold test, I wouldn't turn either one of them down.
I mean, they are so close and so, again, we're so spoiled rotten to have reissues as
good as what they are right now.
But doing a shootout against a real burst, it held up real, real good.
You can be the judge of what you like the sound of better or worse, but they both had some nuances.
They both rang like a bell.
And it's a golden era to be playing guitar.
