_ _ _ Once upon a time, there [Bbm] was a young woman named Mary.
[Db] _ God had granted her special graces so that she would always be pure and holy.
And in fact, she was so pure and holy that God sent an angel to ask her to be the mother of his son, Jesus.
_ She said [Ab] yes, and a few months later, [Db] Jesus was born.
That's what we celebrate at Christmas.
_ _ _ _ But later, as Jesus was dying on the cross, he told Mary that she was to be our mother too.
He wanted her, who loved God so much, to teach us how to love him like she did.
And that's really good news, because we need all the help we can get. _ _
_ _ [Ab] Now fast forward a few hundred years, we can see just how much Mary loves us like a mother.
_ [Ab] [Db] In the Holy Land, there were monks who lived on a mountain called Mount Carmel.
_ They were very holy, and they prayed a lot.
But unfortunately, [Gb] people started to make fun of them, [Bbm] and even tried to hurt [Ab] them.
_ [Db] _ _ _ _
So the leader of the monks, [Gb] whose name was Simon, began [Bbm] praying to Mother [Ab] Mary for help.
[Db] And much to his surprise, [Bbm] she appeared to him.
[Ab] _ [Db] She thanked Simon for his prayers, [Bbm]
told him that [Ab] God would stop the [Db] people from being so mean to the monks,
and reassured him that she is always with him and all her children on [Gb] earth.
_ And [Bbm] then, Mary gave him [Ab] a very [Db] special sign, a cloth called a scapula, to wear [Gb] around his neck.
She [Bbm] told Simon that every time he [Db] sees or feels the scapula while wearing it,
he can remember how much she loves, protects, and cares for [Gb] him like a mother,
always leading [Bbm] him to her son [Ab] Jesus.
_ [Db] _ Now Simon was so excited, he ran to show the [Gb] scapula to the other monks and told [Bbm] them what it symbolized.
[Ab] _ _ [Db] Soon, all of Simon's order of monks, who were called the Carmelites,
[Gb] made their own scapulas [Bbm] and wore them as a [Ab] part of their habit.
[Db] _ _ _ _
But eventually, the scapula [Gb] became popular with those who were not [Bbm] monks,
and even [Ab] today, [Db] hundreds of years later, lots of [Bbm] people still like [Ab] wearing one.
[Db] They wear it so that they will never [Bbm] forget about Mother [Ab] Mary,
and her [Db] love, protection, and example of how to live a holy life.
