I, um, I've been smoking [Ab] for a long time.
[N] One smoker left a double UA up there somewhere.
here, isn't it?
been smoking for a long, long [B] time and for the last few years I've been trying to give up.
every, um
there's a little [Am] support group going on somewhere.
[Db] Um, it's [D] good to open up in the minute.
[Db] But, uh, yeah, every time I give up the same thing seems to happen.

_ I, um, _ _ I've been smoking [Ab] for a long time.
She says about 13 or [E] 14 years old and, uh_
_ _ _ _ [N] One smoker left a double UA up there somewhere.
And, uh, it's bloody hard to smoke here, isn't it?
_ Which is a good thing, of course, but, um_
Yeah, I've been smoking for a long, long [B] time and for the last few years I've been trying to give up.
And, uh, every, um_
[N] Um, _ _ _ _ _ there's a little [Am] support group going on somewhere.
[Db] _ Um, it's [D] good to open up in the minute.
[F] _ _
_ [Db] But, uh, yeah, every time I give up the same thing seems to happen.
I give up [Ebm] by reading a book or getting [Gb] hypnotised or punching myself in the face until I stop.
_ And I give up and everything's fine for about two months.
I start running, [Db] I start doing yoga.
That's not yoga, I don't know what that is.
But, uh, [B] I start eating salad.
The whole thing sort of turns around.
It's great.
_ And I'm really happy for about two months.
And for whatever reason, [Bm] after two months, I'm walking down the road [Gb] and someone lights up a cigarette and it just looks really fucking delicious.
[Db] _ _ _
And then I have three days of, like, battling in my head about whether I should [Ab] smoke or whether I shouldn't.
And in the end, I [A] go to a Sept for 11 at like [Gb] four in the morning and go,
I can't even feel the crap out of myself.
And I [N] can take a smoke break, right?
_ _ _ But it's, uh, yeah, it's not ideal.
[Ab] And, um, the last [Am] time this happened, I was [Eb] in America.
We were [D] on tour and I was in [Bb] Minneapolis.
[Ab] And I was asleep in my bed and I was really [E] struggling not to change.
And, uh, get this, how pathetic is this?
I was having a dream about cigarettes.
_ _ [N] Big dancing cigarettes. _
Smoke me.
Yeah.
_ _ [Db] Stupid dream.
And I woke up and I was like, this is getting actually ridiculous.
I'm just gonna, [E] I'm just gonna go and buy some.
So I put my clothes on and, uh, [N] thankfully it would have been a very different story.
_ _ About the time I got arrested in America.
Yeah.
_ But yeah.
I went to the nearest gas station, which is about a two kilometer [Ab] walk.
And I had a bit of, it just gets more and more pathetic, this [G] story.
_ [N] _ I finally got there and, um, there's no one around because it was four in the morning.
And _ apart from this one guy, [C] this one old guy who was sitting [Db] on a motorbike.
He had a [A] big, big grey beard and big grey hair [Ab] and sitting on a motorbike. _
Not Santa.
[N] No, no.
_ I really fucking wish it hadn't been.
_ _ That would have been such a cooler story.
That time I met Santa.
Yeah. _ _ _
_ [B] Unfortunately it wasn't [Ab] Santa.
And, uh, [N] he was sat there and he was smoking Lucky Strikes and he looked really cool.
And, uh, and I walked past him and _ I wasn't gonna say anything.
[Db] He said the weirdest thing to me.
He said, uh, this is the best cigarette I've ever had in my life.
_ _ I stopped and I was like, this is fucking nuts.
I'm like, I've just been dreaming about dancing cigarettes.
Like, all I can think about is smoking.
And this crazy dude just said that out of the blue.
So I went over and I had a chat to him and, um, this [Ab] is when the story, I mean, stops being [G] funny.
Uh, because [N] it turns out he had lung cancer.
He was dying.
He didn't know how long he had to live.
And he decided to buy this motorbike and travel from [E] Los Angeles all the way to New York.
_ And he wanted to spend the rest [Ab] of his life, however long that may [E] be, with his kids and his grandkids.
Uh, in New York.
_ _ _ It's a pretty strange experience talking to a complete stranger at four in the [G] morning about something so, [Eb] so personal and so [E] sad and so real. _
_ [Ab] _ _ _ I got up, I didn't have much to say to him.
I couldn't say anything to him.
I got up and I, [Am] um, didn't go into the [G] gas station to buy cigarettes.
I went, hmm.
_ [N] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ Over the next few days I wrote this song.
_ And that's dedicated to him wherever he is right now.
That's called Ride For New York and, uh, _ yeah. _ _

[Dm] One [F] last time.
