_ First [Dm] record I picked out was Lud Zeppelin II.
I guess that's in fifth grade, it's like 1989 [Gb] or something.
And I bought Vanilla [F] Ice's first [B] album.
And I put it in [A] the car, tape player on the [E] way home
and my dad was furious because he just thought it was awful.
Like the worst thing he'd ever heard.
And he obviously knew where all the samples
were coming from.

Ding ding ding diggy ding ding.
That's the way theirs [Ab] goes.
Ours goes ding ding ding diggy [C] ding ding.

First thing he did is he went to the public library
and he got this record out for me.
At that time, I [Gb] thought all rock and roll
was like this [B] weird, lipstick, weird, heavy metal shit.
Because that's all that was going on on MTV
was like the rag [Eb] doll video for Aerosmith.
I just [D] didn't get it.
And this record was the first one.
Record I ever heard with like really insane riffs.

I knew once I started playing drums
I'd never be as good as John Bonham.
So, once you know the best, you've already heard the best.

We went to the record store together
and my dad picked this record out and I never [E] heard it.
_ And I loved it.
I was obsessed with it.
I still am.
This record and the slider.
And I have every record like Mark Bullard ever made
but this, to me, is the best record that he [Gb] ever made.
The production and everything about it is perfect.
Their singles are actually amazing.
Their _ [Em] records are [Abm] underrated
because their singles were so good, I think.

I got this when I was [D] 18, I think.
[N] I was delivering pizzas and I loved that job
because I could listen to fresh air until eight o'clock.
And then at eight o'clock, I listened to music
[D] for the next two hours [F] while I was delivering pizzas.
My dad actually used to talk about this record
because my dad worked at a radio station
when he was in [Db] college.
[F] And this record originally came with a bumper sticker
[Eb] with a baby's face that said, Safest Milk.
My [G] dad had that sticker on his car in college.
This is one of the best records [D] that I've ever heard.
And Dan and [G] I used to sit around
when we first started the band and listen to it on repeat.
I voted Mary _ Magdalene
to those who need to hide their shadow.
[D] You know, I heard this before I really listened
to Howlin' [Eb] Wolf, who he's basically trying [G] to sing.
Most of the time, I prefer this to Howlin' Wolf.
I mean, not really, but [E] I do love that album.
This is the Modest Modest's first full-length LP.
[Gb] I love this album.
[F] I love this band.
[G] A friend of mine, who I ended up actually getting married to
and divorced from, but she got the EP.
So I heard [G] about Modest Mouse through that EP,
but I remember going to the record store and buying this.
And I think that this was like a secret kind of code,
sort of, in [D] 1996,
if you were buying [Em] Modest Mouse records.
I just remember being so stoked
when my [A] favorite band, who I saw in front of [Em] 50 people,
got a platinum album, it was all over the radio.
Because I never got to experience that as an adult.
I saw it with Nirvana, but I came late to the party.
So this is the first band that I was a fan of
and I got to see blow up.

The songs aren't great, but it sounds amazing.

My uncle's a musician, he's a horn player.

My dad got me a ticket to San Francisco

He has an amazing record collection
and he pulled out this record and I'd never heard of Can.

I've been into him ever since.
And I actually [Eb] attempted to rip off [Db] a beat
and it became our first hit song, [Gb] Tighten Up.

but the beat on the actual recording's awesome.
