Hi there, welcome to my tutorial on Paul Brady's The Island.
I did this because I couldn't
find another video online of it.
Just a couple of things before I start.
It's primarily a
piano song.
It's written and played mostly by Paul Brady on piano.
So there are three
chords.
Sorry, before I show you the chords, I detune everything down one half step.
E
becomes E flat, D sharp, whatever, all the way down through.
And for this song I've put
my capo on the third fret.
So I just like the sound of it on the third fret.
Three chords
then you need for this song.
[D] C.
Now I know you may be used to playing C like that, but
I play it like that.
And it's just the same [A] chord except with a G note thrown in.
Or obviously
it's a capo, it's not an A sharp, but for the purposes of it, it'll be a G note.
So
C, [D] F major [G] 7th.
[D] All that is is moving that, those two there.
First finger, pointer finger
stays in the same place.
[G]
So then that, so as I showed you that was 3, 3, [A] 2, open, [F#] 1,
open.
[G]
Mute.
3, 3, 3, 2, 1, open.
[A] Okay, F major 7th.
The third chord is G.
I don't know what
way you normally play your G, but for this song, pull that up two frets.
G.
You can play
it like that if you want, but I kind of like the open [F#] E.
[A]
So those three chords together,
when you hear the context of the song, will [G] be
[G]
[D] [G] Okay?
Twice in the song, then two separate
parts rather than playing F major 7th, I play an F part chord.
Okay?
[G#] And it just sounds
great.
I'll just play the song to you.
You know the chords?
[D] [G]
[D]
[G] [D] They say [D] that [G] skies of Lebanon [D] are burning,
[G] Those [D] mighty [G] cedars bleeding in [D] the heat.
[G] They're [D] showing [G] pictures on the [D] television,
[G]
Women [D] and [G] children dying in [D] the streets.
[G] Now we're still at it in our own place,
[D]
Still [G] trying to reach the [D] future through the past,
Still [G] trying to carve tomorrow from a tombstone,
[D] [G] But hey, don't listen to [D] me,
This [G] wasn't meant to [A] be no sad song,
We wrote too much of that [D] before,
[G] [D]
Right [G] now I [A] only wanna be with you,
Till [G] the morning dew [F#m] comes falling,
[D] I wanna take you [G] to the island,
And trace your [D] footsteps in the sand,
[G]
[D] [G] And in the evening [A] when the sun goes down,
[G] Take love to the sound [D] of the [G] ocean,
[D]
[G] [D] [G]
[D] [G] They're [D] raising [Bm] battles over by [D] the markets,
[G]
[D] Whitewashing [G] slogans on the [D] shipyard wall,
[G] Witch [D] doctors praying [G] for a [D] mighty showdown,
[G] They [D] wagered the [G] holy flag is gonna [D] fall,
[G] Up here we sacrifice our children,
[D] To [G] feed the war and our [D] dreams of yesterday,
And [G] they said dying will lead us into glory,
[D] But hey, [G] don't listen to [D] me,
This [G] wasn't meant [F#] to [A] be no sad song,
We wrote too much of that [D] before,
[G] [D] Right [G] now I only [A] wanna be with you,
[G] Till the morning dew [F#m] [D] comes falling,
[E] I wanna take you to [G] the island,
And trace your footsteps [D] in the sand,
[G] [D]
And [G] in the evening [A] when the sun goes down,
[G] Take love to the sound [D] of the [G] ocean,
[D] [G]
[D] [G] [D]
[G] I [D] know [G] plain folks don't [D] see all the [G] story,
I [D] know that [G] peace and love's just [D] copping out,
[G]
I [D] guess these [G] young boys dying [D] in the ditches,
[G] That's [D] just what [G] being free is [D] all about,
How [G] this twisted wreckage down on Main Street,
Will bring us all [D] together in the end,
As we [G] go marching down the road to freedom, Freedom,
[Em] [G] Freedom,
[D] [G]
[D] [G] [D]
[G] [D] [G]
