[G] Quite a few years back now I got asked to take part in a Christmas charity album.
So I went back to the shed and fooled around for a while.
I had a tune.
I was having trouble getting started.
Christmas has been pretty much covered over [D] the years.
[A]
[G] For inspiration I went to one of my all-time favourite records,
Christmas Gift For You, Phil Spector's Christmas Gift For You.
Phil Spector produced it and it's got tracks by the [A] Ronettes, the Crystals.
And Darling Love comes right out of the blocks with a jaw-dropping rendition of White Christmas,
written by Irving Berlin.
And I realised I listened to this song because not every version of White Christmas that you hear has the talking bit.
I can't remember it word for word but she's in LA, she's the palm tree sway in old LA.
But I'm wishing I was up north where it's snowing.
I think [N] Irving had it rhyming a bit better.
But it made me realise that the power of a White Christmas was the fact that the person singing [E] the song is not there.
It's not there at Christmas.
He's wanting to be there.
So Irving intensified the feeling of Christmas by writing about not being at Christmas.
So that gave me a little clue.

[C#m] Hello Dan, it's Joe here.
[E]
I hope you're [C#m] keeping well.
[E]
It's the 21st of [C#m] December, [E]
now they're ringing the last [C#m] bell.
If [A]
[E] I get good behaviour, [A]
I'll be out here [B] by July.
[E]
Won't you kiss my [C#m] kids on Christmas Day?
[E]
[C#m] Please, don't let [E] them cry for me.
[C#m] [E]
[C#m] [F#] [E] I guess the brothers are dropping [F#] down from Queensland.
[E]
Stella's flying [F#] in from the coast.
[E]
They say it's gonna be 100 degrees, even more maybe.
[E]
That [F#] won't stop the roads.
[A]
Who's gonna make [C#m] the gravy [E] now?
[A]
I bet it won't taste [B] the [E] same.
She's got flour, [F#m] salt, a little red wine.
Don't [E] forget a dollop of tomato sauce.
For [F#] sweetness and an extra [E] tang.
Give my love to Angus and [F#m] the Franken-dotties.
Tell them [E] all I'm sorry.
I [F#] screwed up this town, and I [E] got the reader.
I've been [F#] thinking of her, early [E] Christmas morning.
When [F#] I'm standing down.
[F#] [E]
[F#m] [E] I hear Mary's got a new boyfriend.
I hope he can hold his own.
Do [E] you remember the last one?
[F#m]
Now what was his [E] name again?
What was his problem?
[F#m] He never did get near to Simone.
[A] Now Roger, when I'm even gonna miss Roger.
[E] He's dead sure as hell.
No one in here.
[B] I wanna find Freddy, baby, and Jesus.
Have [C#m] a merry Christmas.
We're really [E] gonna miss it.
All the [F#m] treasure and the trash.
Later in the evening.
I can [F#] just imagine.
You put on [E] Ginger Mervin.
The pussy [F#] table spy.
When you're dancing [E] in the reader.
I know [F#] you really like her.
[F#m] Just don't hold her too close.
[C#] Oh, brother, please don't [E] stab me in the back.
I didn't mean to say that.
Just my [F#m] mind, it played out.
Mother, [E] blood and shmatter.
Turns [F#m] imagination into a [E] fact.
You know I love her badly.
She's the one [F#m] to save me.
Gonna make some gravy.
Gonna [F#] taste the fat [E] I'm soaring.
You love her badly.
You're the ball, [E] I'm sorry.
It's the slippery [F#m] shooting.
Falling [E] over these days.
I'll be [C#] making friends.
I'll be [E] making plenty.
[F#m]
[E] I'll pay them all today.
[F#] [E]
I'll pay them all, pay them all.
Pay them all, pay them all.
[F#] Pay them all, pay them all.
Pay them all, pay them all.
