[G] So you're not solo songwriter, yeah, right, right
We've got to that stage right in life.
We had no one around to say to you as crap.
So what do you do?
Yeah, well, that's the thing, you know, obviously after having collaborated with someone like John
It's a hard act to follow, you know
Although when we were writing together, we did write plenty of songs separately.
So it wasn't that hard
I mean I wrote yesterday on my own so
It wasn't impossible but
Even so, you know, I still would kind of take yesterday to John and say is it crap?
And he said no, it's a good one.
So you did still have a collaborator even you did it on your own, but
As I say, yeah, I obviously missed working with him because he's he's very good
You [Eb] know, he's a good guy to work with.
It's just [Fm] easier with someone [G] good
But I did all right, you know came up with the odd occasional sort of winner and stuff
So I never got to the point where I thought I really can't do it, you know
So eventually for this new album that I've done
It was suggested I might want to hook up with Elvis Costello.
Yeah, I'd liked a lot of what he'd done and
The thing is when we came together
The worst similarities really between him and John
In as much as like they both got specs so sort of people with glasses that you know, they've got a different sort of
Attitude to the world.
I think I mean, I don't mean that as a put-down.
They just do they got a
Hmm they can be a little bit more introvert a little bit more of a pussycat on the outside a little bit more
there, you know a
Bit more aggressive on the outside, which John was I think Elvis is a little bit, you know
It's nothing nothing wrong with it.
I mean, I like that in people
So it was good fun.
We sat down to write some stuff eventually ended up writing nine things
We enjoyed each other's skills.
I think you know I could say to him.
No, there's just a little bit
Rambling where you're going there with the melody, you know, pull it in a bit
let's not go there and let's you don't need to go that far [Abm] and
He was interested in those kind of things.
I had [G] to say and it nearly always so okay, we'll try it and
Then he would
You know help me in certain things like words particularly which he's full of you know
He's very wordy.
[Ab] In fact at one point.
He's got a [G] bag, you know
a lot of books in it and they're all things he's heard in pubs or little things that have occurred to him little
Sayings little titles and stuff.
He's got a lot of stuff.
[C] I made the mistake of sort of saying to him
What's well, have you got any ideas?
We just really bag.
