_ _ _ _ _ _ [Abm] Wedding Song, Paul Stuckey.
Now, we are in a very strange tuning for this one.
He plays it on a 12 [N] string by the way.
I'm playing it on a 6 string just because I guess that's what most people have.
Doesn't sound quite the same on a 6 string, so if you have a 12 you'll get a really authentic sound. _ _ _
Let's get in tune first of all.
He tunes his guitar a long way down.
Two full steps.
First string [C] down to C. _
[F] Second down to [G] G.
_ _ [Ab] _ Third down to D sharp is what your [Eb] electronic tuner will say probably. _
[Bb] Fourth down to A sharp. _ _ _
[F] Fifth down to F.
_ Sixth [C] down to C.
_ _ _ _ _ _ So what we've got now is a guitar that acts as if it's in standard tuning but [Eb] with this very _ dark low sound.
Almost like a baritone guitar.
_ _ Within the context of that tuning we're playing chord shapes as if in the key of G.
We're Travis picking most of this song but not all.
We start off Travis picking the intro.
_ [Bb] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[F] So we're going to come in like that.
We're holding down a G chord but with the second string at the third fret.
You don't need the first string.
And we'll play [Eb]
6 3 _ [Bb] 4 2.
Now that's the pattern.
We then play that pattern four times.
So we're counting [Eb] 1 E [Bb] and a [Eb] 2 E [Bb] and a 3 E and a 4 E and a. _ _ _
Almost the whole song is counting in 16th notes like that.
1 E and a 2 E and a.
So I'll only give you the count now where that changes.
Otherwise it's always in that 16th note pattern.
[Eb] _ _ _
You'll play that first bar as written on the tab twice. _ _ _
_ _ _ _ And repeat. _
_ _ _ _ _ And then we begin to [Bb] vary the melody a little bit at bar 2.
[Eb] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
So [Ab] staying in the same shape of G, play the same pattern one more time.
[Eb] _ [Bb] _ _ _ _ Now begin to play the pattern again.
[Eb] 6 3 [Bb] 4 and then replace the second string at the first fret and play [Eb] that. _ _ _ _
So you've got the pattern with the second string at the third fret followed by the pattern with it at the first fret.
_ [Bb] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [Bb] Now play the pattern with the second string [Eb] open and _ again with the second string open.
_ _ [Gm] _ _ [Ab] So the only thing that changes is the second string.
The [Eb] right hand pattern is the same throughout.
It's the third string, _ _ first string, open, open.
_ _ _ _ At bar 3 we [F] have an A chord. _ _ _ _ _
_ [Bb] _ _ _ _ _ [C] Regular A chord.
[F] 5 3 4 2.
_ _ _ _ [Fm] That pattern again but with the second string [F] open.
_ _ _ But don't open the second string until just before you're ready to play that note.
[Fm] You want the [A] previous second fret [A] note ringing until it's time to take that finger off.
[F] So second fret, _ open, _ _ then 5 3 4 3.
_ _ And then he seems to be all on open strings so he must be preparing for the chord move on open strings.
5 3 [Bb] 4 3.
_ _ If you don't like [F] that sudden jump off to open strings then just continue to play the A 5 3 4 3.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [Bb] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ And to bar [Ab] 4 _ where _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ we break the Travis picking pattern for the first time.
C major 7.
All you need is the fifth string at the third fret to start off with.
5 3 1 2. _ _
_ Then again 5 3 1 and 3 at the second [Fm] fret. _ _ _
Leaving that [Ab] third string finger there.
5 [Fm] 3 1 and now 3 [Eb] open.
_ _ And then [Ab] 5 3 1 3 still open. _
_ Still the same count. _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [Fm] _ _ _ _
[Ab] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[Eb] And to bar 5, the last bar of the intro. _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [Bb] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ Back on our [Ab] G chord.
Start off with just [Abm] the sixth string third fret.
That's all you need to start [Eb] with.
6 3 _ [Bb] 4 [Eb] 2.
And then we're going to [Bb] hammer 2 to the first fret.
[Eb] As the hammer goes down we're hitting the sixth string again in rhythm. _ _ _ _ _ _
[Bb] _ _ _ Hammer going down on the second string as your thumb hits the sixth string.
Then we [Eb] continue 3 [Bb] 4 2 open.
_ _ _ _ And then we'll almost [Eb] repeat it.
6 3 4 [Bb] 2 open but hammering and the thumb going down again.
And then 3 [Bb] 4 and 2.
It won't matter.
I think on the record it's still at the first fret.
[Eb] But you could play it open.
That would be fine too. _
[Bb] _ _ _ _ [Eb] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ Still all in [Bb] regular 16th notes.
_ [Fm] That's your intro.
Let me play that through again from the top.
_ [Eb] _ Bar 1.
[Bb] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ And repeating it.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
Bar 2. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [F] _ 3 _ _ [C] _ _
_ [Bb] _ [Ab] 4 _ and [Fm] _
_ [Ab] _ _ [Eb] 5. _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [Bb] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [Bb] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [Eb] _ _
