[D] Welcome back to GearWire.com, I'm Owen O'Malley.
Just a proviso before we start, I'm not a drummer. _ _ _
However, we are checking out the Pearl Rhythm Traveler.
_ The Pearl Rhythm Traveler has been a pretty popular sort of novelty kit.
It was designed by Pearl to be the sort of ultimate go anywhere drum kit and also the
ultimate practice kit.
You get a 15 by 20 kick drum, you get two rack toms, a floor tom.
You also get hardware, a cymbal stand to mount the floor tom and the crash ride on, and also
a hi-hat stand.
The hardware that comes with this kit is really, really nice.
You also get a snare stand and a really great sounding snare drum.

_ _ _ _ _ _ [Eb] _ _
_ Also the toms really sound great.
[B] _ _
_ _ [Bb] _ _ _ [Gb] _ _ _
The shells all [D] come with pretty nice pearl pro-tone heads already.
All the toms are only half toms.
The kick does have a front and back head, _ and the snare is, you know, it's a full snare really.
It also comes with this kick pedal, which is fully adjustable.
It's got a two-sided beater head, adjustable spring, fully adjustable action.
You could fit this whole drum set in like a, you know, a Hyundai coupe if you needed.
A hatchback.
_ And you could take it to live gigs, to recording sessions.
_ The drums, as you can hear, sound pretty great once they're mic'd up. _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ The kick may be _ the sort of weakest drum in the set, but I bet once you cut a little port
in the front head and mic it up, it'll sound killer.
It'll sound just as deep and as punchy as you'll need it to sound on recordings.
_ _ Obviously the only sort of weak part of this kit are the brass cymbals. _
The hi-hats are [E] kind of passable. _ _ _ _
At least recorded, they sound [D] kind of heavy. _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ This crash ride, the CX200, I think may be one of the worst sounding cymbals I've ever heard.
_ _ _ [Eb] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[Bb] _ Still, the idea with these cymbals is to kind of get you up and running as quickly as possible.
_ You know, _ a cymbal upgrade and then you've got a really excellent sounding recording
kit for about 500 bucks.
_ Here you go. _
You can't even get a bell sound out of this. _ _
And one more thing I want to show you.
So the Rhythm Traveler comes with muffle heads for the snare, all three toms, the kick,
and for the two cymbals.
For the hi-hat, to put this replacement system on, you leave the bottom, then you put on
this triangular sort of muffle pad, then you put the plastic hi-hat top on, and to that
you affix this sort of pad decal to the top.
That way you get your click action and _ _ _ _ stick action on the top.
For the crash ride, you replace the ride entirely with this little sort of plastic _ cymbal quadrant.
Affix another little pad, muffle pad decal on top of that, and _ _ _ there you go.
You got your little silent crash ride.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
Then you're left with this silent kit that feels much more like a real kit than any sort
of practice pad kit is going to sound. _
And it's cool because these mesh heads are tunable, so you really get an idea of _ _ _ sort
of descending tones. _ _ _ _
_ The snare feels great, and the kick.
It's just really cool.
So there you go.
That is the Pearl Rhythm Traveler.
_ Retails for under $600. _ _
Makes a great practice kit, makes a great studio kit, makes a great traveling live kit.
The toms sound fantastic, the snare sounds really great, the kick, port it and it'll sound great.
It records really well.
Just replace the cymbals, basically.
There you go.
Thanks for watching GearWire.com.
I'm Owen O'Malley.
See you later.
