[Em] [F#] Hello, I'm Tony McManus, broadcasting from the headquarters of Peghead Nation, my good friends here.
I'm very excited about this course.
I've been trying to explore some of the ideas I bring to approaching this Celtic music on guitar.
So over the course of these lessons, we'll look at individual tunes and use those tunes
to highlight some of the techniques that might be unfamiliar to you if your background is
not in this music.
And hopefully over the course of those lessons, I can show you how to bring those ideas to
bear on this music.
So we've got [E] hammer-on, pull-off, [F#] frail.
[E]
Hammer-on [D] on slap.
[F#] [D]
Triple on the [G] second string.
[A] [F#] And then up to the top.
[D]
[G] [F#] [D] [N]
We'll look at tunes from Ireland, from Scotland, where I grew up.
Ireland being the culture I grew up in, despite the fact I was in the west of Scotland.
And over the course of my career, I've travelled all over the place and picked up music from
Brittany and from Quebec, and we'll look at some of those tunes as well.
We'll look at fingerstyle playing, solo arrangements of these tunes, not just of airs and the slower
stuff but also the faster dance music, which is the kind of nuts and bolts of Celtic music
as played throughout the world.
The jigs and reels and slipjigs and gavottes and all those great dance [D] tunes.
[E]
[D] [Am]
[D] [A] [D]
And we'll [B] employ this guy, a little flat pick, and look at some of the ways I use the pick
to ornament these tunes.
Some of those would be maybe different to how, let's say, a bluegrass player or an old-time
player would use a pick to play melodies on the guitar.
So we start on that [G#] flat seven.
That's the very [F#] crux of the tune right there.
[G#m] So we'll look in some detail at some of those techniques, some different tunings.
Dadgad, for example, C [F#] G C G C D, Csus2 tuning.
There's a special tuning just for playing bagpipe stuff, which is two strings tuned to A.
This great [B] drone tuning, [E] D A A E [A] A E.
And hopefully by the end of these lessons, you'll have a reasonable handle on some of
this great old Celtic music.
Thanks for listening.
