[E] Hi, I'm Bruce Malski.
I'm thrilled to be part of this brand new online teaching service called Peghead Nation.
[Eb] [Dm] I'm excited to have [N] been asked to participate in what seems to be the future of folk music in so many ways.
It's such a departure from how music originally was passed down from person to person and the world has changed.
But as [E] people come together and they still maintain their interest [Eb] in folk music, we find ways to interact [A] with each other.
This form of teaching is very exciting to me.
I hope you'll dig in and [E]
there's a lot to be gained by using the tools of the digital age.
I'm going to be teaching [Ab] lessons.
We're going to be taking old, old fiddle tunes from the [E] mountains and [F] [A] disassembling them.
Trying to kind of figure out what makes them tick.
[Eb] I've spent a lot of time myself listening to old recordings and when I first started to play, visiting [E] some older players who were my heroes
and whose music I would like to import to you through my own kind of set of filters.
Okay, now watch this.
[G] [D]
[A] [Gb] We're going to start, since we're in the middle of a measure, with the two pickup notes.
And we're going to play [Bm] down, up, [D] down, up, okay?
So [Ab] it's short, short, [D] long, string crossing, up, down, up.
And on that one long bow stroke, that slur, we are playing one note on the A string and one note on the D string.
And you just kind of have to learn to do that cleanly.
Likewise, you can get a similar kind of syncopation within the straight shuffle in the last phrase of the tune, just by accenting the first couple of down strokes.
So where we were playing [Gb] long, short, [C] short, long, [Ab] short, short, long, [Dbm] short, [D] short, long.
Now we can accent, on, [Am] on, [D] on, [Em] [D] without changing the direction the bow is moving.
[Bm] [D]
[E]
I think one of the goals in a situation like this is really to develop an understanding that allows you to have your own musical voice.
The greater of a repertoire and the greater understanding of the elements of the music, rhythm and ornamentation and intonation,
and the combination of all those things that you can have, the better your own musical expression is going to be.
And just have some fun with it while we're doing it, because it's not getting there, it's the journey.
So I hope you'll join me.
This is Peghead Nation, and I'm Bruce Malski.
[D] See you soon.
