This next song comes from a book of [B] mine,
[F#] called A Short History of the Folk [B] Song Revival,
from [E] Sainted, Sainted, Sainted, to [F#] Everybody Must Get Stoned.
It's a satirical piece.
[B] [F#] The song is called The Party.
It's about a party that's going on all around us, folks.
Wherever you look, there's [B] a party.
Sometimes it's [C#] a party in the form of a [F#] church,
[A#] sometimes in the form of a war,
or [B] [F#]
[B] [F#] [Bm] who knows, perhaps even in our own homes,
[B] this party might be going [F#] on.
It [G#] opens up with the communists going to the party
to get [F#] money for their cause,
[B] so they can come back later and kill [B] all the people at the party.
[F#] It's essentially an anti-communist song.
[B] [F#]
The fire-breathing rebels
[B] arrive at the [F#] party early
Their khaki coats are hung
in the [C#] closet near the fur
[B] Asking handouts [C#] from the lady
[F#] while they criticize [D#m] the law
[B]
[C#] Hosting of the murder
[G#] of the very [D#m] hands that bore
[B] And the victims [C#] learn to giggle
[F#] for at least they are not [D#m] bored
[G#] And my shoulders hide a truck
As [G#m] I crawl [C#] beneath the rug
and retune [F#] my piano
The hostess is enormous
[B] She fills the [F#] room with perfume
She meets the guests and smothers them with green
[G#] And [B] she asks, [C#] how are you?
[F#] And she offers [G#] them [D#m] a drink
[B] The countess [C#] of the social grade
who never [D#m] seems to blink
[B] And she promises [G#] to talk to you
[F#] if you promise not to [D#m] sing
[G#] And my shoulders hide a truck
As I crawl beneath the rug
and retune my piano
[F#] The beauty of the hour
[B] The countess of the social grade
is blazing [F#] in the present
She surrounds herself
with those who [C#] would [G#] surrender
[B]
Floating [C#] in her flattery
[G#] she's a trophy-price [D#m]
caress
[B] Protected by [C#] a pretty face
[F#] sometimes cursed, [D#m] sometimes blessed
[B] And she's staring [G#] down their desires
[F#] while they're staring down [D#m] her dress
And [G#m] my shoulders [C#] hide a truck
[G#m] As I crawl beneath [C#] the rug
and [F#] retune my piano
The eagles shine like light bulbs
[B] so bright you [F#] cannot see them
Blind each other,
blinder than a [C#] sandbox
[B] All the fury [C#] of an argument
[G#] holding back [D#m] their yawn
[B] A challenge [C#] hits the chandelier
the selfish [D#m] lard to drown
[B] To the loser go [C#] the hang-ups
To the victor go the [D#m] hanger's odds
[G#m] And my shoulders [C#] hide a truck
[G#m] As I crawl beneath [G#] the rug
and retune my [F#] piano
They travel to the table
[B] The host is served [F#] for supper
And they pass each other down
[G#] for salt [C#] and pepper
[B] And the [C#] conversation sparkles
[F#] as their wits are [D#m] dipped in wine
[B] [C#] Dinosaurs on a diet
[F#] On each other they [D#m] will die
[B] Then they kick their cheeks
[C#] and they squelch the belt
[G#] Saying darling you tasted [D#m] divine
[G#m] And my shoulders [C#] hide a truck
[G#m] As I crawl [C#] beneath the rug
and retune [G#] my piano
[F#] The wallflower is waiting
[B] She hides [F#] behind composure
composure
She loves to dance
and prays that no [C#] one asks her
[B] Then she steals a glance at lovers
[F#] while her fingers [C#] tease [D#m] her hair
[B] And she marvels [C#] at the confidence
of those who [D#m] hide their fears
[B] Then her eyes are closed
[G#] as she rides [F#] away
with a foreign [D#m] legionnaire
And [G#m] my [G#] shoulders hide a truck
[G#m] As I crawl beneath [C#] the rug
and retune [F#] my piano
For Romeo is reeling
[B] Counting notches on [F#] his thigh bone
Searching for one [F#] hundred [C#] and eleven
And [B] he's charming [C#] as a child
While [F#] he leads you [D#m] to his wed
[B] Seducing [C#] queens and juicy girls
[G#] In the boudoir of [D#m] his pet
[B] Then he wraps himself
[C#] with a [G#] tablecloth
And pretends he [D#m] is a vet
[G#m] And my shoulders [G#] hide a truck
As [G#m] I crawl beneath [C#] the rug
and retune [F#] my piano
Ah, the party must be over
[B] Even the losers [F#] are leaving
But just one doubt
is nagging at my [C#] caustic mind
So [B] I snuck up [C#] close behind [F#] me
And I gave [D#m] myself a kiss
[B] And I led myself to [C#] the mirror
To expose what [D#m] I had missed
[B] There I saw a [C#] laughing maniac
[G#] Who was writing songs [D#m] like this
And [G#m] my [G#] shoulders hide a truck
As I crawl beneath the rug
and retune [F#] my piano
[B]
[C#m] [F#]
[B] Thank you
