learn how to play Close to You [Eb] by The Carpenters.
We'll specifically dissect the intro and verse
and then you'll head over to HDpiano.com for the rest.
For now, the intro and verse sounds

[D] Okay, so what you heard there was the intro and then the verse repeated twice
with an altered ending the second time.
So let's look at them.
[Gm] _
Starting with the intro.
Left hand is just a G, right hand is just a D and G.
_ _ _ [Cm] _ You start by playing D and G twice
on [Gm] its own.
_ Then in between we play a [C] G right before hitting C and G in the [Gm] right hand.
_ _ [Cm] _ _
[Gm] _ _ _ [Cm] _ [Gm] Okay, let's try that. _
[C] _ _ [Gm] And then when we're back to D and G this time the inside voice
_ _ _ _ _ _ [G]
plays D, E, D and then the left hand G [Cm] and then back to C and G in the right.
So that
looks [Gm] like this.
Sorry, I heard it.
_ [C] _
_ [Gm] _ _ [G] And [Gm] then that repeats [Cm] and _ _ [Gm] _ _ then the second time on the
repeat we just hold right there.
_ _ _ Okay, let's try that intro.
Ready, and.

_ _ Alright, good
enough.
Moving on to the verse.

It has us with a C in the left, D, E, G in the right.
_ The left hand rhythm [C] is going to be pretty much the same throughout and that's this.
Three, four, [B] one, two, three, four, one, two, three, four.
[C] So notice it's long, short, long, short.
Or one and two and three and four and one and two and three [B] and four and one and two
and three and four.
[C] Keep that in mind.
[D]
I won't touch on it much more than that throughout.
Okay, so D, E, G to start in the right.
We play that four times with that rhythm that
I just described in the [D] left hand.

Just quarter notes in the right hand.
[D] _ _ _ _ [B]
Next chord is B,
E, F sharp in the right hand, B in the left. _ _
_ [B] Middle voice goes from an E to a D sharp. _ _
_ [Bm] _ _ [D] Top two notes drop to A and D.
The F sharp stays on top.
Left hand still on a [Bm] B.
_ _ _ [Em] _
_ On an
E [E] minor chord, an E minor seven chord.
E in the left, B, D, G in the right.
_ _ _ And the inner
voice moves up to E on the third and fourth hits.
[Em] _ _ _ Okay, [C] let's go back, recap those four
measures.
_ It's right where I do birds.
[D] To [B] B sus, to B, to [Bm] B minor seven, to [Em] E minor
seven. _
_ _ Let's do those again [D] slower.
Two and ready and play.
And one, two.
_ _ _ [B] _
_ _ _ [Bm] _ _ _ _ _
[Em] _ _ _ _ _ [C] Good.
Our next
four measures starts on C in the left, B, E, G in the right. _ _
_ [D] _ [C] The bottom note moves up
to E, or pardon me, to D.
[D] And then we have D, E, G. _
That's on counts [C] three and four.
So one, two, three, four.
And then we do the same thing.
This time starting on a C triad.
One, two.
Move that bottom note in the right hand up.
_ [G] And here's where we end the first
time.
A G major nine.
It's A, B, D in the right, G in the left. _
_ [D] _ _ And then we have A,
D, F sharp for the third and fourth counts.
_ And then we hold one, two, three, [C] triple it.
_ It's my favorite [D] part in the song.
One, two, three.
_ [C] We play [D] D's and [Db] C sharps really quickly
leading into our next time through the verse.
_ Okay.
So that again, [D] that looks like this.
Two, three, four.
[C] _
_ [D] And then we're back [B] to another verse.
[D] Okay.
So let's go through the whole
verse really slowly.
One and two in verse and go.
C's nine.
B [B] sus to B, to B minor [Bm] seven,
_ to E minor seven, [Em] _
_ to C major [C] seven.
_ _ [D] _
_ [C] C to nine, to [A] G.
[D] Add the major seven.
Hold.
One, [G] two,
[D] here, triple it.
Good.
Let's repeat it.
Keep [B] going. _ _ _ _

The second time through
we play a G seven [G] or G nine.

And this [B] middle voice here
goes up [Dm] to B.

If I have to beat three, it goes from [Dm] A to B.

And that's
going to prepare us for the bridge.
