Hey Chris, this is John
just don't want to let you know I got your email and
Kind of tickled that you reached out to me to answer a question about that [G] Pike County breakdown lick
So hey, you know, you're great player yourself and I've seen there your videos
Of your of yourself playing as well as your band.
So real good stuff.
So um anyway
[E] So we're gonna I'm gonna just go over that lick with you
Figured it'd be [Gm] easier to do it on a video [E] I could show you
[A#] You could see what I'm [N] doing rather than try to type out a lengthy a lengthy description or whatever
so anyway, um, I
Don't have high tech so I'll have to manually move the camera [G#] or whatever if I [Gm] want to try to show you something different
But anyway this lick I think that what you're talking about [C#m] is this one here
[A] I
Guess the one to talk about so, um, [E] so basically I believe you had a
Post
On the hangout some time ago kind of asking that [N] question and you had a couple of responses
where
They were describing
How they do it and how they think Earl did it
What I'm gonna try to describe is just the way [G] I do it.
So
[F#] I've never
Unfortunately ever [Gm] had the chance to actually meet Earl Scruggs.
I've met Don Reno
I've met Ralph Stanley and been lucky in that respect, [G] but never had a chance to meet Earl, which is a shame
for me anyway, but
So all I can do is rely on what I hear and that old recording of Pike County breakdown that's out there I
Play what I'm trying to emulate what I hear
so I know on [D] the forum there was some description of where [A] you
You [Gm] wouldn't pull off and then you pull off and then you don't pull off and then you pull off
But I I just pull [E] off every time.
So here's here's how I do it
So I'm almost start with this kind of an angle and we just can't really
So you can see my [A#m] fingers [G] so so basically
For me all I'm playing is an alternating thumb pattern with right hand.
So [A] it's three two, three one three two, three one
And every time I pick the third [C] string with the thumb
I do a three to two pull off [G] on the third string.
Of course, I'm capoed [Am] on the second fret and I do it
[B]
No, I don't hammer on just to pull off
[E] Okay, so each time I pick [Gm] the thumb with the alternating thumb pattern [N] of the square roll or whatever people call it
Three two, three one thumb index thumb middle
The [G] thumb strike I do the pull off from the third fret third string to the second fret third [F#] string again.
I'm capoed [C] up so [C#] and
[G]
[B]
[E] That's it.
So so
So I think the sound you hear is just that [F] fast
So I'll play it again slow.
[B]
I
Don't [Em] hammer.
I don't do that deal
okay, so it's just they're both on I pick the string third string and
[C#] [F] What I try [F#] to do is have [A] the pull off
happen
[G]
between the pick of the thumb and the pick of the index on the right hand [C#]
so that [E] okay, [C#] and
then again
[E] [C#m] I
[E] Never remove the [B] index finger.
[A] Okay, so it's just picking up that speed
To
To [G#] get that sound I think is what we're [F#] talking about.
Now others have described us and [A#] something like this
[B] [A]
[E] Where they [C] just maybe do a bend
[G#]
[C] [Em] or [B] maybe tops away
[C#m]
[A] To me it's like patting [D#] your head rubbing your head and patting your stomach [E] or something
It it's awkward for me.
So I say well, I'm just gonna do the same movement on the left hand
for each strike of [E] the thumb
[A] Okay, so [F#] so that's basically I do
[Am] [E] [A]
That's it.
So I hope that was some of some kind of help
[A#] Yeah, or if you need a different angle to see you may try and do it this way
[G] To see what it looks like from this side
[G#m]
[A] Okay, so it's that
[F] Coordination on the left and right hand [A] and each time [G] you strike that thumb on the third string.
You're doing a three to two pull off
[C#m]
And to me when I play it that way
it sounds
[G] Like what I hear Earl play on the album.
So anyway, Chris, I hope that [D#m] helps if you [Gm] let me go
I'll probably [F#] talk forever.
So I better stop while I'm [G] ahead.
No, you can't
